The Rani
Just been watching luther and was thinking that ruth wilson who plays alice would be a great casting choice for the rani if moffat even chooses to go down that route. what does everyone else think?

IIRC Pip & Jane Baker won't let the BBC have the rights to The Rani unless they write the story!
I don't think the Moff would want to use the character anyway. |

Also, do Pip and Jane Baker really have the rights to the Rani? It would be a shame if they do, because I'm not sure if they are alive anymore. They were almost in their mature years when they wrote the two DW stories for both Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy.If 'the Moff' did want to have the Rani feature in a future story, he would have a dificult battle on his hands. |

Isn't that the same Ruth Wilson that played Jane Eyre back in 2006 on BBC1?

I'd rather see an older actress playing the rani against capaldi. Honour blackman, anyone. Of Joanna lumley?.....

I so don't get The Rani obsession.
Can someone explain why this comes up so often? |

I have vague recollections of the Rani but I was never particularly enamoured with the character. In any case, I can't see them featuring any other Time Lords until the Doctor finds and rescues Gallifrey.
The Time Lady I'm really hoping will return is Romana

No they're still alive!
Whether they own the Rani or not I don't know nor do I care, I don't think its the sort of character that Nu Who needs imo. Out of all the villains that were ever created in Classic Who, The Rani was the most shoddily treated of the lot. Her debut story she was given The Master to deal with as well as the The Doctor when she could have sole villain on her own and her next story the script was so awful it didn't do her character any favours. Fortunately Kate O Mara's performances in both stories were the saving grace but I don't think the character got the stories she deserved and I would love to see her back just to get a decent storyline. Maybe the reason behind this so-called obsession about her return is due to the fact the was treated so shabbily in the 80's.

Can someone explain why this comes up so often? 2) She could have been an interesting character but was treated as generic pantomime villain, and 3) along with The Doctor and The Master, she fits the Rule of Three. |

Strong clever powerful female villain who is also a time lady. Potential to be a great dangerous nemesis for the Doctor.

One of the things I always like about the Rani is that she rather different from other villains. She didn't want to be ruler of the universe, or to kill everything, she was just amoral. In "Mark of the Rani", her experiments made the villagers very aggressive, but that was only a side-effect, one she didn't care about. If it had made them nice and calm, she would have been just as indifferent to them.
She is only interested in her own goals, anything that does not directly affect them, is none of her concern. |
