How come almost everyone (apart from Jo Whiley) who stands in for Steve Wright is better than him? He appears to have no clue about music and just blathers on with the same fake old banter day after day. I love Chris Tarrant when he's on and Patrick Kielty isn't making a bad job at the moment either. Give SW more hols I say!

Not loving the show then?

I think SW is fine in small doses. Even as someone who has grown up with his shows always being on I could never listen to a whole one. That would be like eating a whole box of Ferrero Rocher in one go with similar effect. Just listen for 20 minutes and he's fine. The guest slot is over-rated though.

I couldn't disagree with you more, I hate it when people cover for him, especially Kielty and Ball.

Steve Wright is a top radio professional who knows how to present a radio show, Most of the people who stand in for him are not, Patrick Keitley in my opinion is dreadful, Hurry up back Steve !!!!!

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree then! I just prefer my djs to have some knowledge/taste in music, that's all.

So you think Kielty has hand-picked all the tunes he's playing today do you ?

Not to mention playing most of the song, not singing over the song, not talking all over the song.

No of course I don't. What I'm getting at is Steve Wright constantly illustrates the fact that he's there to chat only-he doesn't seem particularly interested in the music he's playing and doesn't appear to have much knowledge-which seems strange given his choice of career. I have nothing against him personally, but I just find his programme a turn off...when he's on anyway!

Hi Lucy,

As you've only made 30 posts I'll assume that you're not famillair with the way Digital Spy works. You see agreeing to disagree with someone is fine in the real world however on here it's not allowed.

Steve Wright has been on the radio since forever and is therefore a radio god and disliking him is just not allowed. You are just wrong and that's the end of it. You can debate (well make postings) on here for the next 100 pages but as Steve is an old school radio person you will never ever be right. If you're going to be reasonable and "agree to dosagree" perhaps I can point you in the direction of media uk.

For what it's worth I agree with you up to a point because I can't stand Steve Wright but I'm not a fan of many of his stand ins either. I don't mind people like Zoe Ball and Chris Tarrent but I don't like Keilty.

I think Steve is great when he's interviewing someone I'm interested in but unfortunatly Steve is very lazy and complacent and this shows in his shockingly bad timing and lack of a new idea in the past 20 years. For someone like him who can do it properly there is no excuse for his shocking timing and treatment of the music other than lazyness and possibly ego because he believes the audience would rather hear him than the music.

Although it's down to personal taste the OP questions Steve's taste in music. OK we've all got different tastes but I think the best thing about Steve's show is the music, it never fails to entertain me, the music is always fist class.

I wouldn't say that Kielty has any great music knowledge either but at least Steve makes a great radio show unlike his cover.

If Radio 2 puts Chris Tarrant or Richard Allinson in his slot then they will sound as good as Steve Wright. This is why they try to get the most annoying person to cover, the last thing the station wants is someone who knows what they're doing which makes Wrighty look bad..

I think what some of us find annoying about Steve Wright is that he used to be one of the most creative presenters around, Its the question of why he's stopped being creative that's the issue.

Another here missing Steve a real pro, my afternoons aren't the same when he is on his hols.

His replacements are poor in comparison. it would be good if Tony Blackburn could cover when he takes these short breaks, I might listen then....

Use to love Steve Wright back in the day but he does sound dated now and that dreadful Sunday Love Songs is well past it's sell by date however he's far more enjoyable to listen to than Patrick Kielty.

How on earth does he keep getting this gig and what are the managers at Radio Two thinking?!
PK shouldn't be let any where near a radio studio IMHO.

Steve has a massive audience and that's why he's lasted so long in the afternoons. But he could go soon. The radio 2 boss has a huge dilemma. He's under enormous pressure from the BBC trust to replace one of the 'big 5' daytime DJs with a female, but they all have really high listening figures. My understanding is that Steve is the most likely to be replaced, with either Jo Whiley or Vanessa Feltz likely to replace him. Obviously Steve will resist any move to move him to evenings or weekends though. We might hear something this year or it could be a few years yet before any change. It all depends on how brave Bob Shennan is. Incidentally if Steve were to be replaced it's likely that Simons drivetime show would be extended and start at 4pm, which makes a lot more sense.

Why Steve and not Ken who is 4 years his senior? Nothing you have said makes any sense, especially suggesting Feltz as a replacement, one surefire way to lose listeners.

Ken IS Radio 2. Popmaster is just one reason why I listen to this station and Ken's dry wit shows that he is perfectly in tune with callers and the music he is given. His comment the other week really did make me laugh. After an insipid track was played he said 'that's our record of the week.... and you'll be hearing it every day...'

As for Vanessa Feltz there must be some more entertaining female presenters out there - why not scout for some fresh talent like Kiss FM used to do?

Is it me or is this post just another classic DS guess work item?

"My understanding", "We might hear something this year or it could be a few years yet before any change" etc. I'd guess that things will be exactly as they are this time next year.

If a daytime slot comes available, it certainly won't be Feltz or Whiley that takes it. Jo is perfect in the slot she currently does, however, when she covered Wright's show she was yawn inducing for an afternoon slot. More likely than not Sara Cox will be the first in the queue for a slot,

Oh dear, now I am guessing!
