It's just been announced that the actress Edna Dore has died.Wasn't there a rumour once that she was the voice of the 'old woman' on Steves show? I guess we're about to find out if it was true or not !
Paul O'Grady spoke about her dying on his show yesterday.

There is a rumour on Wikipedia about her been the old woman on Love The Show Steve Wright's show.

Current work[edit]

Wright is on BBC Radio 2 weekday afternoons from 2pm until 5 pm, and on Sunday 9–11am presenting Sunday Love Songs. He presents the former with Tim Smith and Janey Lee Grace (DJs often heard as relief presenters on Radio 2), plus traffic reporter Sally Boazman (whom Wright calls 'Sally Traffic') and "The Old Woman", whose identity has never been revealed, though it is apparent that she is a senior citizen and not a younger actress. It has been rumoured that she is actress Edna Doré[citation needed]. During the 14 May 2007 Steve Wright in the Afternoon, Shane Ritchie referred to Old Woman as Nana Moon, a character from EastEnders played by Hilda Braid. Old Woman was mistakenly described in this article as having appeared on Channel 4's Paul O'Grady Show, credited as "Joyce from Dagenham"; in fact, Joyce from Dagenham was a caterer at Channel 4 whereas the Old Woman's showbusiness career had been launched years before the O'Grady Show began in 2006.[3]

I'd get the sack if I let four 'key' personnel off at the same time! Having said that I won't be missing 4 of those 5 and their stand in's ain't much better, you can get better at your local temp agency.....
Only a station funded by public money could get away with it. It is certainly weak management for allowing it.
As for Patrick Kielty switch off time for me as well.

Been confirmed.

Steve just announced that "Old Woman" died on 2nd November. Her real name was Joyce Frost and she was a real old woman from Brentwood in Essex with no previous radio experience.

She'd been ill since the spring and was a widow.

Perhaps that's why Steve was off last Thursday and Friday? I'd assumed it was to do with his own mother, but maybe it was both.

I was only thinking the other day that she hadn't been on the show in a long time. Looks like she really was Joyce from Dagenham after all.

I was thinking the same myself at the start of the week. Sad to hear that "The Old Woman" has left us - an excellent tribute to Joyce from Steve and the team.

That's really sad, I always liked the Old Woman.

Steve was off last Thursday and Friday as it was his mother's funeral, I imagine Joyce's will be next week or the week after.

Patrick Kielty is awlful. Steve Wright is been doing radio for 40 + years and is one of the best DJ's around.
Because people get old and tired, even your beloved Steve. I used to like him bit had to admit 14 years ago that he's crap.

I am 30 and have listened to radio 2 all of my working life since 2004 ish. On and off at times, with listening to other things for periods. However over the last couple of months it has been full time radio 2 again. I have really been enjoying Steve Wright. He has personally always been my second favorite during the day after Ken.

Bit late but also sad to learn of the loss of the old woman.

Of course you could tell the difference. Playing the happy, happy sound of Radio 1 jingles and the AM quality would be a give away!
