50th Would it has been better if?
I recently rewatched the 50th special and it was just as good as the first time around.
But I have to ask what if instead of the secret John Hurt Doctor Paul McGann's 8th Doctor was the Time War Doctor instead? I was always a fan of the 8th Doctor and that would've been a perfect way to bring him back. |

The Night of the Doctor and The Day of the Doctor gave us the bridge between 20th century Doctor Who and 21st century Doctor Who.
It's not perfect, only a complete on-screen regeneration between John Hurt and Christopher Eccleston would have made it so IMO, but it's the best we're going to get!

So glad we got JohnHurt
However, is funny don't you think., i agree the younger TV Movie McGanns' Doctor (and McGann the actor) could never be the War Doctor. However modern McGann had asteely edge now Having re_watched Amy's Choice today, it's a wonder the timelords just didn't unleash the 'dark' side of the doctor in a short of induced coma. He was very chilling

Good point doctor can be very dark. Especially when his freinds are threatened. When he says "The darkness in you two (Amy and Rory) it would have starved to death in an instant I chose my freinds very carefully". Later however in TWORS Amy gets her revenge on Madame Kovarian leaving her to die saying "River Song didn't get it all from you - sweetie!".
Took Amy a while to get over that. Conveniently it was all set right we couldn't have a doctors companion actually being a killer or letting someone however nasty and evil be killed can we ?. Like how Kovarian was a typical coward and hypocrite . Expecting the "good" people to save her after all she did to them. Love DW roll on S8.

The 50th would have been better if the Moment was played by the Classic Doctors. It's nothing against Billie Piper - though I hate Rose, my problem is nothing to do with the actress, who's been fine in other things, was fine as the Moment and seems nice in real life.
Moffat could have made a point of the fact that the Doctor would continue to live, by showing his various faces having grown old, while simultaneously making the point that he was denying millions of children the chance to do the same. Each of the older Doctors could have had a couple of scenes, each reminding Hurt of adventures where they'd won against the odds without killing millions of innocents. The last scene(s) would feature Tom Baker, not just because he's the one who's aged the most, but also because he's the one who failed to prevent the Daleks' creation in the first place. How could all the post Time War Doctors not regret that decision? It could have been very powerful in the right hands. I love that idea and won't let it go! However the Five(ish) Doctors reboot would still have to go ahead - it was the best part of the anniversary (imo) and if showed before the main event, would have been a great red herring... |

The look was fine, which was about it. I must be alone in thinking John Hurt was average. He is a brilliant actor who just seemed to be shoe horned in for the sake of it. |

I can see why it would have been a little neater to have mcgann has the war doctor and it would have been nice not to have the doctors numbers not put into such a state of confusion, but that said I loved the episode as it was. Thought the whole 'secret incarnation' idea was one of Moffats better endeavour's, and the casting of John hurt was perfect. The only major niggle I have about the episode was not seeing the entirety of the hurt to eccleston regeneration (as in not seeing ecclestons face clearly), but I think that point has already been much discussed on here previously.

I've watched the 5oth show a few times now and even though it was well done, i just think it was a massive missed opportunity to do much better. the idea off passed Doctors playing the moment would have been perfect. Moff was never gonna do something like that though.

The more I watch, the more I wish we could have seen more of the time war.
However, I really liked the episode regardless. |

Woop woop, that's the sound of the police.
I do love a bit of KRS-One. Anyway, I think due to the nature of his actions The War Doctor made sense as a Doctor all of his own. McGann might have worked to but I think the Fiftieth needed more than easy fan pleasing stuff and the introduction of an entire new incarnation was brilliantly crazy and headline grabbing. My only regret is that while Hurt was fantastic he wasn't at any point seen as being half as dark natured as he probably should have been. It was built up as this tragic and dangerous weapon version of the Doctor and instead all we saw was a pretty amiable if a little grumpy grizzled old man. There were hints of the damage done by the War but not enough at least for me. I actually think that was the main issue I had with the Anniversary special. Don't get me wrong. I loved it. But it wasn't quite as dramatic and serious as I wanted and at times felt too knockabout. But then that's my preference. I prefer the dark and angsty stuff. Many don't. And for a celebration it needed a fair mixture. I just don't think the balance was quite right. |

Since DW returned in 2005, and Chris's Doctor mentioned The Time War, my thoughts, and a lot of other's I should imagine, have been that it was Paul's Doctor fighting the Time War, then after it finished, he changed into Chris. I'm not happy that Steven Moffat decided to have another Doctor between Paul and Chris. Why, oh, why let us think for years that the 8th Doctor fought in the Time War, then introduce John Hurt as another Doctor? People have already, years before, created YouTube clips of Paul McGann changing into Christopher Eccleston. Here is one example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D62u...etailpage#t=39 I love the music played over this clip. I think it was used, towards the end of Doomsday, when Rose and the Doctor talked at Bad Wolf Bay, just before Donna turned up in her wedding dress. |

It's not as if anyone was misled. The Time War has been shrouded in mystery since 2005. Why does it matter if the final canon version contradicts the YouTubers' fanfic versions?

I don't know how many of you know this, but the War Doctor has just been released in 5 inch action figure form.
Here is the link to the doctorwhotoys.net page: http://doctorwhotoys.net/otherdoctor.htm I doubt I'll be getting this, as I'm not a huge fan of JH's Doctor, or the thought of SM putting another Doctor between McGann and Eccleston. I've had time between 2005 and 2013 to get used to the idea that Paul McGann was the Doctor that fought in the Time War. I think he would have been the better Doctor for it. But hey, SM had other ideas in the end. |

How can there be a contradiction if something has never actually been stated? Assumptions - even long-held assumptions - do not count as facts. If Moffat starts pandering to the fans who post fanfic videos on YouTube, every episode will feature a mawkish montage sequence. |
