I use a WD My Passport Ultra with a Sony TV. No PSU, power comes via TV's dedicated USB. Check your manual as it also probably has one. You can't use the drive for anything else and programmes only play on that TV so only any use for time shifting.

I use a Verbatim 500g USB drive on a Samsung TV. Works flawlessly for both recording and timeshift without need for seperate power supply.Check your TV docs as many tv's like the Samsungs have a specific USB port for this purpose...

I have a usb hdd slot but cant see anything in the books about it and when I asked lg they said it must be a self powered one and formatted fat32 also it can't use power from the tv through usb cable.

What is the exact model of your TV and do you have a download link for the manual?

The User Manual states:

Some USB Hubs may not work.
If a USB device connected using a USB Hub is not detected, connect it to the USB port on the TV directly.
Connect the external power source if your USB is needed.

It's all a bit confusing but I would have thought that if a portable hard drive (2.5") was used (with only one USB connection) that power would be supplied from the USB socket on the TV
An external desktop drive (3.5") is usually is supplied with it's own power supply

My advice unless you are really hard up would be to get a PVR instead of messing about with an HDD, the extra convenience and features make this a much better option for most people.

100% agree with bobcar - a PVR is much easier and has more facilities.
With a HDD with your TV all you can do is record the channel the TV is tuned to or timeslip.
Whereas a PVR can record two channel at the same time and some will allow viewing of a third channel at the same time (if it's on the same mux) or you can watch a recording

I found a review for the LG 42LA620V on Amazon that said - '...these were on a USB HDD, and the TV just detected the HDD, popped up on the screen and I had full access...'

So you should be ok with a regular 2.5 inch USB portable HDD. I have been using a USB HDD for over 3 years with my Samsung TV and it's fine for what I want. mac2708 posted - 'With a HDD with your TV all you can do is record the channel the TV is tuned to ' but of course you can set up a programme to record and the TV will change to the right channel to record it.

Any one of these drives should work with the LG: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_...rnid=187137031
