Upgraded my wife's phone today in a CPW store.

The agent said Vodafone has just launched its HD Voice service, I can't find anything about this though online.

Anyone know anything?

Being in the buisness and very close w/voda it's not something I've heard

Well then that's good.

But they haven't exactly said anything publicly. Hence why I was doubting the validity of what someone said in their shop.

If they have (defo not where I live as I just tried it) it will be 3g only.

Meh.

Then again, unsurprising given the amount of ancient legacy 2G Ericsson BTS' they still have lying around.

Though perhaps more importantly now that most networks have "HD Voice" it's about time they figure out how to make it work cross-network.

Given the general call quality on the network, is it really needed??

And not forgetting that HD voice doesn't seem to be operable between networks, the whole thing has been of low interest to most users.

Doesn't work with call diversion either.

I currently forward my EE phone number to my Three phone. If my wife calls the EE number, and she's on Three, no HD Voice.

If I call her, or she calls my Three number direct, there is and - boy - what a difference.

Although that could just as well come under cross-network.

Would be interesting to see if it worked with on-network call diversion. Obviously it won't work with cross-network as in your example but that doesn't prove it won't work with call diversion in general.

not exactly surprising that is it. given that it doesn't work cross network.

But it's still Three to Three, just via a diversion. I always assumed that since number portability, calls were more intelligently routed.

No, it's not Three to Three at all.

A diversion works no differently from the phone (actually, a call routing computer on the diverting network, but in practice, the phone) you're calling making a three way call and connecting you to the target number.

Hence it's a Three to EE to Three call - cross network twice

Ok, got an hd voice call today. Was a bit disappointed it was to a phone connected to a car kit so didn't get all the benefit. Much improved.

3g only. I made another call to the Mrs and could hear the drop down in quality when the phone went to 2g.

Pity thought with how they were making upgrades to there network they would of made HDVoice on 2G/3G so when they eventually launch VoLTE you would have excellent call quality where ever you were. Good to know it is actually working though.

Indeed, especially given the units they now use are new, combined 2G/3G/4G units.

Ah so there is an existing thread, my bad for not seeing it.
(Thanks for bringing it to my attention qasdfdsaq)

So we're a way out from cross network wideband codec support, that sucks.

Have any countries already got cross network support yet ?

With the congestion on the networks in London its nearly useless.

Call normally drops off 3G after 20-40 seconds anyway and can't lock it to 3G only on an iPhone 5S (non jailbroken) so the whole thing is a bit of a waste of time.

Oh well, progress is still progress I guess.

I've asked and the responce I got was Vodafone have no short term plans for HD Voice (Wideband).. My contact might be wrong. However there are a few forum members on here who have closer knowledge of Voda than who I asked, who have yet to comment on this thread..

Not going by my contact, but as I said he's not as close to the network team as I have with EE/3/o2. There are two forums members here who could confirm this for sure.
