BT Wifi on new Infinity
BKM
16-03-2014
I had BT Infinity 2 installed on 4th March and, up to today, BT WiFi (aka Fon) has NOT been activated on my HomeHub5.

While I am not really complaining I wondered if this was unexpected!

Log onto the Homehub and activate it if you wish.

I am new to BT Broadband!

I did not know this was even possible! The limited research I had done suggested that it got enabled remotely after a few days - even if one was not sure one wanted it!

You are automatically opted into BT Wifi unless you opt out. Either way the Home Hub gives you option to opt in or out.

How do you know its not activated?

Go here and make sure you're opted in

https://www.bt.com/wifi/secure/statu...L_btfon/status

If you're not opt in. If you are and it's not working try opting out and then in again. I had to do this when I joined BT.

It can take a few days for your hub to become a Fon hotspot after activating. BT sort it out by sending a command to your hub

It was few weeks before my Hub5 finally showed BT WIFI as "Active".

I remember being asked a time of ordering did I want to be opted in to BT Wifi. As I use it out an about myself it was a no brainer for me.

It is opt out now, when I started with Bt it was opt in and really should have stayed that way. It became opt out a few months before I left.
I never bothered to activate it, I did not see and still don't see the point.

Well if you need the internet when out and about it's very good. Basically park up near a few houses and 95% of the time you've got net access. Also you can have net access in hotels etc that offer WiFi through BT for free.

It's very very useful imo.

The HH gives you a link to the website, you cannot opt in or out via the HH

Indeed. Some people do not get out and about though.

If I saw anyone parked up by my house I would want to know why there are there.
Anyway, with more and more people using smart phones and with more providers giving away better data usage, I think the days of of people parking to use Wi-fi is almost over.

I do use the Wi-fi in our city centre when I am having a coffee, but then I get unlimited data as I use the same company for my home broadband.

I did not have great speed anyway, so no way was I going to allow someone to use the bit I did have.

Why would you want to know why someone was parked up on a public road? In any case if you were offering a WiFi hotspot for people to use you'd probably have a good idea

WiFi has it's advantages over the mobile networks, not least that it can cover places where there's no 3G/4G. It's often faster and it doesn't eat into your mobile data allowance (I don't have unlimited).

And you can use FON networks abroad, which is a lifesaver. Data roaming is usually hideously expensive. Especially if you are outside the EU.

If someone is sitting in a car outside my place for any amount of time it looks suspicious. Most people don't sit in a car for any length of time.
We used to have a fair few BT wi-fi/Fon around here, but it seems a lot of people have dropped BT

Just done a check on what I can get from here and I see 2 BT, one talk Talk, 3 Sky, a couple of EE, one orange, something called wireless station what ever that is and what looks like a Belkin router, plus my TP-link. Later on about 9 my next door neighbours router will switch on it wireless, so that will be another BT.

Used to be a load of BT around here and used to be a pain as well and my old computer used to keep trying to hook up to fon.

Well, yeah if I did offer a public hotspot then I suppose I should expect it, mind you where I am, I doubt many people would come here just to get free Wi-fi.

As I said I do use the one in town, so I know it can be useful, but never found Fon any good, the few that was around normally had a naff signal anyway.

I still think it should have stayed opt in,

Susiciously like they have some time to kill and / or they need access to the internet? Yes, I would agree with that.
