I'd add Head Bangya (or however we're spelling that
). One of my favourite songs on that album, and honourable mentions to Catch Me If You Can and Onedari Daisakusen. Best review I saw for the first album was from a guy for MetalHammer on youtube, great review, basically sums up how I feel about it too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xi0x-72zmA But yes it is their best song I also wanted to give Akatsuki a shout out but I understand not everyone is into the slower more ballad-y tracks.

I like that one too. To be honest, I like pretty much every song on there. The only ones I didn't listen to as much were probably Uki Uki Midnight, and Babymetal Death, which seems to be more of just an extended intro. Kind of played the rest of it to death though over the last couple of years

Well, I'm a huge metalhead but don't like J-pop or K-pop, and Gimmie Chocolate was the song that got me into them, and is still one of my favourite songs by them, so where do I stand here?
![]() It's great though the way Babymetal have amassed fans across all corners of the music spectrum. In some ways I suppose they're the anomaly! I'm sure someone somewhere is writing some thesis on the power of Babymetal and if not they probably should. Quote:
So I downloaded it off Amazon for a listen, the chorus has a catchy hook I could get into but other than that kind of passe, at least next to a bunch of J-pop I listen to. I discount the lyrics (to a point) since I can't understand the language
How is the second single 'Megitsune' IYO? Catch Me If You Can - amazing production on that track. Line! - Very J-pop and I love the random rap in the middle. ![]() Head Bangya!! - needs no explanation! ![]() Onedari Daisakusen - It's got a Linkin Park-ish, edge to it. Uki Uki Midnight - Again probably too J-pop for some, but I really like it, especially the dubstep transition at 1min 35. Doki Doki Morning - Pure bubblegum fun. And just because I like to contradict myself, I actually don't mind the obligatory ballad - Akatsuki, because it's still kind of upbeat and it really allows Su to shine. Basically I love the whole album, the only ones I don't bother with are Babymetal Death because it's just a glorified intro track and Rondo of Nightmare. |

BMD is great live, usually the opener (sometimes megitsune), theres a bonkers extended version on Legend 1997 btw. If you haven checked out the Budokan red/black live cd & dvd its definitely worth getting. I think they actually sound better live, Su's voice is a bit young and overproduced on the first album.

I should imagine they're feeling pretty tired by now. At the end of the Wembley show, they said they going back to Japan. Then 2 days later they're in the States firstly for an interview, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ21BY6Nq3U then the appearance on a late-night chat show.
I suppose it would be fairly logical, flight-wise, even though it would be extremely tiring. I guess with their ages, they do have to be careful managing their schedules though so you'd hope they'd get some time off now. I'm sure plenty of people have seen this, but it was released two years ago and it's one of the "react" videos where various youtubers react to babymetal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeAR...&nohtml5=False I love watching it every now and again as it just makes me smile at their reactions, and i don't tend to watch a lot of these reaction videos as it is. |

I bought Metal Resistance on vinyl but a bit disappointed to find no additional artwork - just a facsimile of the CD
![]() While I'm here I have to just say there are some outstanding tracks on this album, favourites being Sis Anger, Tales of the Destinies, the One, Awadama Fever (fine successor to Gimme Chocolate) and From Dusk till Dawn. Not so fond of No Rain No Rainbow, Amore and YAVA! but maybe they will grow on me. |

I think they're certainly moving in a good direction and have come out with two great albums now, I hope they continue to do so. Also wonder how long it'll be before we see a wave of copycat bands?

Yep, those would be my picks too. Would probably add Meta Taro as well, though nobody else seems to like it, and Syncopation is pretty decent too. Not sure if you have that one, it was the Japanese exclusive release.
Agree, I think if they’d swapped No Rain, No Rainbow for say, another Awadama Fever type song, or something equally mad and Amore was as good as Akatsuki, this could have surpassed the first album for me. It's pretty close though, and I think I'm just impressed at how leftfield some of it is, and how they haven't dumbed down or played it safe. Even after the first album, they still managed to surprise me with a few songs here. I think they're certainly moving in a good direction and have come out with two great albums now, I hope they continue to do so. Also wonder how long it'll be before we see a wave of copycat bands? ![]() Copycat bands? Its entirely possible but I don' think there is room for in the market (not US/UK anyway), Babymetal are a one off and the vision and creativity of the band is going to be a very hard act to follow. Hope they are here to stay though, such a refreshing act sonically and visually. How they develop as a band is going to be very interesting due to their age, in just a few years I don't think they will be able to get away with the Jpop influence. |

I think on this album, those J-pop influences have been toned down even more. On half the songs, if you didn't know, you'd just assume it was some crazy new gothic/ power metal band. Fine by me, some of my favourite artists from the last 20 years or so have been gothic metal bands with female singers. |

You should do, it's not an amazing song, but it’s worth having.
I think it’s probable! I doubt any of them will be as good though. There’s already a band called “Ladybaby” trying to do a similar thing, but they’re kind of terrible! Agree. I do think now though, that they’re only J-pop influenced in the sense that they occasionally have some upbeat vocals and silly lyrics, but that’s kind of where the similarity ends for me. I mean, I don’t even like J-pop- I think the songs are generic, like most pop, and just sound like European cheese from about 20 years ago. There won't be any successful Babymetal duplicates imo. It's sort of like "Gangnam Style" by Psy - no matter how hard Psy tries to force a Gangnam Style 2, it just isn't going to happen and that level of success for one song alone may never be reached again; certainly not for a long time anyway.
So no matter how anyone tries to force a Babymetal clone, it's not going to have the driving novelty factor that had most people curious to check Babymetal out in the first place. That means the clone is unlikely to get as many listens and YouTube views, meaning the chances of them going global are infinitely smaller. I just think when it's an act that's much more "out there", you can't really replicate them. South Korea tried back in 2014 to duplicate Babymetal's success with PRITZ and that band got bombed with "Babymetal clone" criticisms and still do to this day. |

BBC have done an hour long radio doc on the rise of Babymetal, not enough Babymetal in it but a good listen nonetheless. It covers the culture of Jpop and other Japanese bands that are doing well on the crest of a wave that is Babymetal.

well, well - didn't the organisers say "no Babymetal"? but damn if they were on Sunday that would have been a great lineup: Maiden, Nightwish & Babymetal
Still mid-billing isn't bad on Friday for an act that is quite young, literally and metaphorically. Since he said "No Babymetal" their second album peaked at #15 and they pretty much sold out Wembley Arena, coupled with the high profile Radio 1 interest and their current success in America. plus they just happen to be playing Download France on the Saturday He has also complained in the past of the lack of new bands coming through to potentially headline in the future. When one does come along that may have the potential to do that at some point you can't then say you won't book them... |

I don't think Babymetal will ever be headline material unless they perform absolute miracles to shake off their "manufactured" image, I mean even now when they're 4th down (below KSE which is frankly a joke), people are still complaining about them even being booked in the first place, so I think there's always going to be that pushback on them which would only be amplified if they get picked to headline.
![]() The only difference between a "manufactured" band and a "traditional" band is who does the hiring, the bands management or the other band members. Even with a "traditional" band plenty of people have been removed/hired at the say-so of the bands manager or record company. After all at Download, where there are plenty of other stages and things to do it, isn't as if they are hard to avoid, but I bet plenty complaining now will watch them and probably change their opinion after seeing them live. |

Excellent performance from BM last night at APMAs. First did Karate, then did 2 numbers with Rob Halford. First Painkiller, with just Su (and the Kamis of course), then Breaking the Law with Yui and Moa on guitars!
Looks like Su had the time of her life rocking out with Rob. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mua4s7qyu-k |
