I have noticed listening to various 'new' and 'old' greatest hits albums of the same artist that the old ones often sound better (IMO).

Careful listening of some of the newer ones reveals a more 'veiled' sound, less detailed and as though they have been processed through a graphic equalizer (more bass and certainly louder)

As many greatest hits seemed to be reissued (albeit with a few added tracks) I would suggest plunging for the older ones - though listening to them first to make sure.
