Best 50inch TV (no 3D)
...any suggestions and advice on the BEST (picture quality) Tv to go for... Want 3 or 4 HDMI inputs... - no 3D or fancy stuff... and 'probably' not a plasma...

And as you're wanting 'best' picture, again it's likely to be a higher end set, if you don't want 3D you don't need to use it (and the vast majority of sets are never or only very rarely used in 3D). |

Slightly smaller than your spec, but a top TV with a very good picture at a good price...
http://www.richersounds.com/product/...sams-ue46f6500 JL have got the 50" version, but quite a step up in price... http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue5...lasses/p515333 |

I own the 39 inch model of this TV and the picture quality is very good.
It's only got 2 HDMI's though, but you could always get an HDMI switch box. Some user reviews here. There are TV's with better picture quality and more HDMI's but, as has been said, it will be a more expensive higher end set and will come with all the bells and whistles. |

Just been down to currys. I went to look at the Panasonic TX-L55ET60 £999. It was next the Samsung UE55F6670 which was £1079. Picture did look a lot nice on the Samsung. I asked sales guy about how sport looks since LCD isn't great when it comes to that. He showed me a demo of a race car driving on a track to show what looks like. There wasn't any of the juddering that some say happens although im not sure how much I can rely on some demo as proof. Would have liked to have seen what football is like. Tv does look very nice though. If anyone has it and watches football then maybe they can tell me what its like.

I've got a Samsung 6500, and there is no judder with motor racing or football.
If you go into John Lewis's when the football is on Sky, you will probably be able to see for yourself, because unlike Curry's, JL run Sky live on a lot of their displays. The 6740 is a bit more expensive at JL, but they will usually price match Curry's, and you will get a 5 yr warranty included. If you buy on line, you will also be able to return the set to a branch of JL for a refund if not happy. From what I've seen, the 6500 has been getting slightly better reviews than the 6740, and is a bit cheaper at 1045 for the 55" in JL. Or Richer Sounds have it with a 5 yr warranty for 999.95, which no doubt JL will price match if you like the look of it. Both JL and Richers provide much better after-sales service than Curry's, and include a 5 year warranty in their prices. |

Unfortunately there isn't a JL or richer sounds store near me.
I don't think you will have any problems with motion management on any of the Samsungs in that price range. We have a Curry's super store not far away, and I often use them to view, but not to buy because of their poor aftersales service. Curry's claim to price match, perhaps you can negotiate inclusion of an extended warranty to match Richers/ JL deals? My experience of Curry's is that they will slide out of price matching whenever possible, so they might say that as there is no local JL or Richers, they won't do it. But worth a try, as they will usually haggle over prices in store. |

Another thought: do you have a Waitrose near to you?
I bought a tablet on line from JL and collected it from our local Waitrose - I was also able to return it to the same Waitrose. If they do it with larger items, might be worth looking into. |

No waitrose either. A bit lacking in electrical stores near me. Was also looking at sony w905 and Panasonic TX-P50VT50B.
I went for the Samsung based on vibrance of colour, balanced contrast, and lack of glare. But then choice of screen is a pretty subjective issue. You can always do something about the sound - I've just hooked up a Yamaha RX-375 with a set of Tannoy speakers to my Sky box, and the Samsung screen does them proud. |

I think you need to go and see them running - what looks top-notch to one person may not to another.
Our local Curry's run all their sets from a central source, so if it's the same where you are, it might not be possbile to see the best of any of the sets, but some comparison should help you decide. Chances are whichever one you go for will look better at home, particulalry if you have Sky HD. The Panasonics can be quite juicy, e.g. the one at the top of your lists uses around 300w ph compared to around 40 with the Samsungs. If you have the TV on a lot, and all other things are equal, it might be a factor worth taking into consideration. I've always bought Sony or Panasonic in the past, but this time round the Samsung screens stood out for me. |

I doubt there's much to chose between them, more a question of what takes your eye.
Sony's usually have very solid blacks and sharp definition, but I found the contrast greater, and with less graduation in the colours than the Samsungs. I think it's the backlighting in the Samsungs that does it for me. I haven't seen the latest Panasonic with the massive hertz ratings. Pity you can't get into a JL's and see Sky running on a few sets. I found Curry's repetitive clips pretty unhelpful when it came to subtle differences. |

If you buy on line, even click and collect, you are covered by the 7 day distance selling regs. But I suspect Curry's will quibble as much as possible over a return. Might be worth having a chat with one of their sales staff about such a possibility.

Personally, I would go for the Panny 50vt50 plasma as I don't like lcds for a variety of reasons. Have a look at avforums.com for their views as well.

I think I might go for the sony. Read on avforum and it seems to get very positive feedback.

According to one review it gives better picture quality than the Samsung 7 series from last year - at a fraction of the cost: http://www.trustedreviews.com/sony-k...review-summary This new model actually performs better than Sony's new top of the range 1080p "9 series" panel ... |

You should take a look at the just released Sony KDL-50W829 LED - it is getting rave reviews and can be had for £899 including 5 year warranty from John Lewis.

How come they've just released a tv from w8 series? Was gonna get 905 55" version from currys which is what I wanted. Currys don't have the same size tv of 50w829.
This years 9 series is called W955 whereas last year it was called W905. A 55" version of the W829 will be released very shortly but imho it is too high a premium over the 50" panel - approx £300 more. |
