No compensation for anyone whose SIM has been deactivated tonight, leaving them with no service whatsoever, and no chance of picking up an emergency SIM unless they were wise to keep a spare one. Telling them they deserve to be cut off won't make them feel any better.

I think they should have given notice, but as it was free I guess there is no claim to be made.
I should imagine the company has failed / closed. If you look in the contract of any network it says that if they can no longer provide service to you they don't owe you anything, typically something like that is in the terms, but in more legal speak.
Another case of if it seems too good to be true it probably is! Other examples of that have surfaced this week....

There's no scam, they have been running for a while it'd just that they have obviously not made a success of the business and as such the plug has been pulled.

Hmm, maybe not a scam but irresponsible running of the company - things should never get so bad the plug is immediately pulled with no notice.
Blyk gave quite a bit of notice iirc - and had a close enough relationship with their host MNO that customers who didn't want to do anything were put on an Orange plan.

Agreed, however this business may have been wound up by the creditors or something, rather than just deciding to stop trading. It is only a small business, ran by just a few people I think, so I guess they are quite sad they wouldn't make it work too.
It is a shame though for people that use it as their main phone and have given people the number etc, however that's the risk you take in dealing with very small MVNOs I guess.
I have seen this coming for a long time, I think Samba will survive as the video model is a bit more saleable to advertisers and they only give a few megs per video, meaning wholesale costs for that is pennies and they are charging more than the wholesale cost per impression, so as long as continue to make sales it is a sustainable model. I always had my concerns that Ovivo was going to struggle.
I'm surprised Vodafone didn't step in and port everyone to a Voda PAYG plan, at least as a stop gap.
Worrying that using an MVNO could leave you just cut off like this, although I think my network (GiffGaff) are a safer bet. They seem to have a more sustainable business model.

The thing with Giffgaff is they are owned by Telefonica, so if they did decided to cease operation of Giffgaff they would give plenty of notice and smooth transition to alternative PAYG. It would be brand closing, not an entire company winding up.

Safer bet they run on O2 who have just sold there Ireland O2 to 3 and there broadband to Sky is that telling you some thing.
Been with Ovivo for about 8months (switched from GiffGaff). Couldn't load any websites earlier on my walk home from work, assumed it was just a dodgy 3G signal. Tried to send a txt an hour or so ago and didn't go through so thought I'd look at their website, I'm pretty surprised it's happened without any notice.
Filled in my info for my PAC code just over an hour ago, still waiting. Back to Giff Gaff for me.

Are they in administration? There is no notice on the website showing who has been appointed etc.
If it is in administration, I don't think it is a very good administrator who just shuts down and offers PACs to all of the companies only asset (the user base). I'm sure Vodafone would have offered at least a token payment for ~50,000 users.
Part of me is pleased - got sick of people I knew waving their Ovivo sims in my face telling me how how I was being ripped off with my contract sim etc etc

Vodafone aren't responsible, as a very small business there's not a lot that can be done if the business is wound up. There is no money to be made from the userbase on a free service, so I guess they just decided to close it.
There is the mystery of them saying their profit and loss sheet was showing them in the black and that they were making money in an article published just 2 weeks ago. In the closure notice they say it was due to things outside of their control, so maybe Vodafone changed the wholesale rates or decided to strike them off as a MVNO or something.
Some giffgaff troll is tweeting @ovivomobile and posting referal links to giffgaff, gosh those guys are unbearable, I hate the fact that giffgaff causes so much Twitter spam and junk postings in general all over the internet. I think it's a bit much to be touting for business at Ovivo customers under such circumstances to be honest.
