Wasn't Martha involved with someone else anyway after she left the Doctor?

They not saying "This new blokes gay so he must get involved with the other gay character" - they're saying "This is the existing gay character's next partner and we're going to show you how they get together".
It's like a new companion being introduced in Doctor Who - we always get an introduction first - to find out a bit about who they are. Introducing the character to us before they meet The Doctor is just the way the story gets told - no-one's saying she's "the only companion in the village".
You have to fill in the gaps with soaps. You may only know of one gay character but there's millions more in that "world" - including amongst the extras. Just because they've not been fleshed-out doesn't mean they have no personality within that universe.
I didn;t think it was that weird Martha and Mickey ended up married. They were both at the end of S4 . Mickey wanted a new life so went of with Jack and Martha at the end. Is it so bizzare that after spending time together they realised they liked eachother ?. Old cliche one thing leads to another. Yes Martha did have a brief engagement after S3 to another doctor before meeting Mickey. What was she suppose to do wait for the doctor or become a nun ?.

Neither did I.
As far as I was concerned, they had a lot more in common than skin colour and I just assumed that was the point.
They were both "collateral damage" in the Doctor/Rose romance. They were both "followers" who evolved into "freedom fighters" and they had both had incredible experiences that very few other people could possibly relate to - which they'd want to be able to talk about with someone who understood them.
Apart from that, they were not as "big" with fans as some other characters so putting them together in an "action scene" - and justifying them being together in that scene - allowed two characters to share that limited screentime whilst also saying "Don't worry about them - they're happy".

Is it that? Or is it that all characters in soaps generally end up in romantic trysts, and the pool of available candidates is too small? There's only so many times you can pull off the 'gay person falls in love with a member of the opposite sex' twist.

Their colour appears to matter to you. They were two characters who hadn't had a resolution - there was no plan when Mickey or Martha were cast for them to get paired up. Rose, Donna, Jackie, they all got paired off in happy-ever-after couples. Even Jack got a shot at redemption - and they had to specifically clarify that a past character was gay for him to get a match.
I'm more bothered that Martha's previous fiance got ditched without so much as a word.
