The ultimate living expression of power, intelligence and beauty in Lamniform evolution the White Shark (Carcharadon carcharias) is also the subject of more myth legend and fantasy than any other carnivore on the planet.

The 'average' size for a fully mature female is 5.5 - 6 metres and 1.5 - 2 tons.

There are several unverified (but probably reliable) specimens of around 7 metres and such a shark would weigh around 3.5 tons (for comparison the shark In 'Jaws' was 7.3 metres long).

Henry Mollet has a very good site on large captured White sharks for example (although I much prefer to see them alive and free in their natural habitat of course).

But I still wonder.

Before over fishing and due to their very long lifespans I think the odd gigantic specimen could have attained a length of 8 metres and a weight of over 4 tons.

What do DS members think?

Apparently there was a Great White that oceanographers had tagged "heading towards Cornwall" last week

She had been heading due east across the Atlantic and came within 700 miles of the Westcountry coastline - the nearest recorded for a shark of her species.

However, her GPS tracker that has been following her ever since it was fitted by a research team in Florida, now shows she has made a sharp turn and put on speed to head north westerly - away from the UK.

The 2,000lbs shark had been meandering around the depths ever since crossing the Mid-Atlantic ridge and at one stage was on course straight towards the Westcountry coastline.

That would have been interesting for the surfers here

Yes, Lydia is a small female that is part of Ocearch's White Shark tracking project.

It is a bloody interesting site to visit, if anyone is interested.

I find sharks totally fascinating. I'll definitely go and have a look.

Neither can Janet Street Porter, and given the chance I know who I would stick in bloody soup.

When we were in the Maldives there were a lot of Black Tipped Reef Sharks around... They were around 6 feet long which was quite big enough to have swimming around near you

They were quite timid though and the baby ones inside the reef were really cute..

The biggest thing we saw was a giant ray.

Wow! I really envy you.

The only wildlife I ever see is insects, arachnids, birds and the occasional fox.

Beautiful videos, thank you very much Ann. X

But as total Techno-Luddite I have no idea how to copy and paste Youtube vids.
It's easy, just copy and paste the URL for the video you're watching,as you would on any other site. They all have their own URL.

Just found a picture of the baby, it's swimming in less than 3 feet of water.. http://www.wisbeyfamilytree.co.uk/we...our_sharka.jpg

There's a stingray in the middle of this picture, again in just a few feet of water... http://www.wisbeyfamilytree.co.uk/we...on/our_ray.jpg

A larger shark that I took from a jetty, this one was about 4 feet or so long, but they were everywhere outside the shallower water...

http://www.wisbeyfamilytree.co.uk/we...reef_shark.jpg

We also captured some dolphins from a boat, we have a video with about twenty in but this is the best I could capture on a stills camera. It's not exactly predictable where they'll appear so they are much easier to video.

Look at your screen at the moment. The URL for this page is

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/newre...ply&p=71855918, second row down from the top of the screen? I am NOT being rude but I take it you know how to copy and paste?

I know how to copy and paste, but as I have never been shown how to do something I did not know how to find the URL for a video.

Thank you.

I hope this works as my first attempt, just a brief video of Gustave the huge Nile crocodile.

Crocodilians are another group of animals I really admire.

Good old Gustav. What were they intending to do with him? Sorry I'm on Gustav's side and what happened to the poor goat? Stay away from his territory and you won't get eaten alive. The human race stinks.

Well done by the way!

Scary to think that the Great White Shark isn't even the apex predator in the oceans, that's the Orca which is bigger, faster and highly intelligent.

The Great White Shark has been around for many million years in its current state - it can't really evolve to get any better at what it does.
