The catastrophic decline of the magnificent Ocean Whitetip - humanity makes me sick at times.

This video has been doing the rounds recently.

Personally I feel sorry for the Scalloped hammerhead as it was rendered virtually helpless by the fishing line, but the big Tiger was just doing what comes naturally - taking advantage of an unexpected opportunity for an easy meal.

And now for some good news:

Basking sharks have been appearing in "good numbers" around Coll and Tiree, a wildlife tour operator has said. Oban-based Basking Shark Scotland said the large fish have been drawn to the surface to feed on plankton in a period of calm and sunny weather.

I should add that basking sharks are harmless plankton-eating sharks.

Beautiful animals the baskers.

A few shark stories to keep this thread ticking over.

The magnificent Greenland shark turns out to be the oldest living vertebrate on earth (it was previously thought to reach 'only' around two hundred years or so), if a medium sized five-metre specimen lives for four centuries then how old must the very largest (seven to possibly eight metres) of these mighty predators actually be?

The mind just boggles.
