Are there any foods that you think are particularly underrated or overrated by people in general or the media.

My view.

Underrated: Eggs. They are treated OKish, but are still undervalued. The are convenient and versatile, a good source of protein, fat and minerals. They have been hit in the past by unfounded cholesterol fears, and Edwina Currie didn't help with her salmonella scaremongering.

Overrated: Honey. Just sugar with good PR.

Would this be better in the food and drink section?

Anyway

Underrated: Onions It's an incredibly versatile vegetable that adds plenty of flavour to most meals yet people only mostly mention it as one of those "other" ingrediants

Overrated: Salmon Yes it's a nice tasting fish but it's expensive and there are many more flavoursome fish you can get.

Underrated - pease pudding.

Overrated (and thoroughly revolting) - yogurt.

Overrated - Sugary cereal that pretends to be healthy.

Underrated - Porridge

Overrated - oysters. They are just salty snot, absolutely disgusting and I reckon people who claim to enjoy them are just liars. They have to be lying.

Underrated - sprouts. We love them in our house and eat them throughout sprout season, not just at Christmas. Sprouts for the win!

Oops, you are right. I'm used to being in GD, so forget about other more suitable places. I'll ask the mods to move it.

Underrated: Oxtail.
We had a fabulous 'rabo de toros' yesterday, broadly adapted from Rick Stein's Spain book.

Overrated: Monkfish.
Tried it once, maybe it wasn't a good recipe (I had it in a restaurant), but I found it very very bland.
Ironically, in the very same book of Ricks, he has a monkfish, red pepper and saffron rice recipe. Maybe I should try that.

You have them the wrong way round! I enjoy oysters and I'm definitely not a liar. Sprouts however, are horrible.

Underated - Ox Tongue. Had some with a steak in a really nice restaurant and it was lovely.

Overated - Nuts and dried fruit. They do nothing for me, fruit cake is just not nice and I don't understand why it's always used for wedding cakes. We had an amazing 3 tier chocolate cake, with a layer each of white, milk and dark, soooo much nicer than a crappy fruit cake.

Overrated - salads. I don't like Tomato or Cucumber yet places which sell salads tend to shove it full of the stuff!!

Underrated - chorizo. I don't think its used often enough I love the stuff

Overrated: Truffles, tried some for the first time and they didn't live up to expectations, nor were they worth the money!

Underrated: Tofu, very versatile if you know how to use it.

I was joking about people lying........

They are seriously disgusting though, and I'm not a fussy eater. There is not much I don't like but I almost threw up when I tried an oyster. Vile.

Under rated: Banana - high in potassium, magnesium and 20% of vitamin C.

Bananas are 0% fat and low glycaemic when bought with green skins - 68p per kg.

Over rated: Bread - heavily processed and highly inflammatory, won't be a staple for much longer with wheat prices increasing.

They have a season? I use frozen ones year-round.

They are a classic example of people's taste buds varying in sensitivity, though. People who don't like them are generally more able to taste bitterness. Also, the sprouts we eat today are less bitter than they were 40 years ago, because of growers have been selecting against bitterness.

Yes, they are a winter vegetable. I'm not keen on frozen ones so only eat fresh sprouts when they are at their best from around November to January.

Whenever you see sprouts being served up on the telly, they always look overcooked to me. I wonder if a lot of people don't like them because they're overcooked and not very nice? I like them with a bit of crunch!

Yes, sooooo over-rated. Sandwiches, toast/soldiers for eggs/french variety, toasties (mmmmm... the options are endless), garlic bread, bruschetta, bread & butter pudding, breadcrumbs, dipping in soup.

It's never inflammed me either in my 46 years of eating it,, to my knowing.

Under-rated - bread!

Over-rated - Can't really think of anything other than "tapas" restaurants....now they DO inflame me!
