The second doctor actor would have been celebrating his 94th birthday today.

Not as familiar with his doctor as some of the others personally, but feel each doctor deserves to be honoured and acknowledged on this forum on their birthday where possible. Im sure for some he remains their favourite doctor, and whatever the case, his memory, and that of his doctor will live on in the form of his surviving episodes for generations to come.

Sometimes, though, I do feel Troughton slips under the radar a bit. mainly because he's eclipsed by the following two Doctors, a lot of his episodes are missing and some people refuse to watch his stories as they are in black and white.

Hopefully last year's rediscovered episodes will have reversed that last trend a bit but watching through his era now, it really is great to see his Doctor in action. No moralising, being pompous, domineering, violent or patronising towards his companions. Just a decent straight forward nice Doctor with a gentle sense of humour who does the Doctor stuff as and when it's required.

Oh my Giddy Aunt!! My favourite classic Doctor!! I bet if he were alive now - he'd have been more than happy to do commentaries on the DVD's!

Bless him - it's thanks to him that the 'regeneration' experiment worked all those years ago! Otherwise there would be no Doctor Who as we know it now!!

This point is so true. Wev'e all seen/heard of show's where they try to recast the main chraracter and it dosen't work. As much as it can be credited to whatever genius behind the scenes who actually came up with the idea of regeneration, it also has to be credited to Patrick Troughton for making it believable, and making it clear that he was still the doctor.

When you think about it, people talk about Hartnell as the most important for being the first, but Troughton made the regeneration concept work enabling the show to grow, change and eventually have a 50 year history, so you could say his contribution was equal to that of Hartnell in terms of importance.

Really surprised their are so few people wanting to pay tribute to the man who was the second doctor, what with all the classic who fans on the forum. There was a happy birthday thread for an actor who was a one story character the other day which got more tributes.

I think it's just because he's the most mistreated by missing episodes and therefore to many people the most obscure.

Yes, there are loads of episodes missing but there are still plenty of available episodes out there to enjoy. Season Six in particular has only eight episodes missing and two of those are animated so there's no reason why anybody can't watch Troughton and get a feel from his Doctor from that Season alone.

If not, there's still loads of odd episodes and the recently discovered stories from last year so there's no excuse for not watching him really!!!!
