Hi all - has anyone experienced this?
My S4 did an update yesterday which took about 1 hour. After a system reboot its acting a little weird - slow to turn on, slow 2 come off lock screen, battery icon turned white now not green, lots games and files etc. Has this ever happened to anyone and does anyone know if I can revert it back? Thx for any help, Pete

This will be the 4.4.2 Kitkat update.

Unless you're an experienced user (and it doesn't look like you are, or you'd know what the update was), there isn't a way to revert to 4.3. To clarify, you could root your phone and install a 4.3 ROM, but it would void your warranty. Do NOT attempt this unless you know exactly what you're doing, or you will brick your phone and it will become useless.

You may be able to speed things up by clearing the cache. You do this in the following way:

Turn your phone off completely.
Hold the Power, Menu and Volume UP buttons down simultaneously until you see "Boot into recovery" in tiny blue letters in the top left corner of your phone.
Let go of the Power button.
That should bring up the Recovery menu - let go of the other buttons.
Use the volume buttons to scroll down to Wipe Cache Partition.
Press the power button to select.
Once this has happened, select "Reboot phone" (should be the first option) and press the power button again. Your phone will reboot / restart.

You should always do this after a major system update as it helps clear out old and obsolete files. Your phone will hopefully start to run faster.

Be careful you don't press the Wipe All Data / Return To Factory Mode option - it will do exactly as the name implies and return your phone to the exact state it was in when you bought it. You'll still have the new Kitkat update, but all your apps and accounts will have been wiped and will need to be re-installed.

Mine notified me of a firmware update earlier, all 571.23MB of it. It's still installing lol but i'm not sure if it's 4.4.2 or not. Time will tell.

Another possibility would be to back the handset up with Samsung's Kies software, perform a full factory reset and restore the data from the backup.
It's not normally necessary but performing a factory reset after a firmware update tends to iron out any kinks.

I installed the update last week and I feared that I had bricked my phone.

After the install it rebooted, then the screen went black and locked up on me. I couldn't do anything with it. I left it, and went back to it about 15 mins later and had a dialog box about software update not responding. On clicking OK it was back to normal and like you, I noticed the battery etc was white, not green

I had to re-install some of my apps, and I've lost the ability to add pictures from Gallery in the Outlook mail app.

Another thing I noticed after the update, was the weather widget has gone crazy. It will often report insane temperatures, like 50C. I have to refresh to get the correct info.

Not impressed at all.

Sounds like a rushed update, Kit Kat is quite a major revision change underhood. Strange that you lost apps, which ones was it?

Thx McTeagle for your quick and very comprehensive reply. Thx also for the pocket-lint link which explains things further. After a day, the speed returned and like Gari P at 1st I lost a few apps. I did not re-install these as I didnt have time then, but the next day, they re-appeared - strange but true. Thx all, Pete

My Three branded S4 got KitKat last night. Not impressed with white colour free icons like battery, signal meter, wifi meter. Boring! Plus the colour is tapered. Regarding Outlook I was able to send pictures from Gallery but had to do sign in first.
