So at the start of the month I phoned EE to tell them that I would not be renewing my contract, only to be told there would be a charge for 'early notice'.
I was informed that the only way to avoid the extra charges was to phone on the final day of the contract to get the PAC code.
So I did, and now they are telling me that whilst I now have avoided the early notice fee, I still have to give 30 days notice.

I can now only think that this trickery at the start of the month was 'employee having targets to achieve. Any thoughts?

As unsatisfactory an experience as this it hardly compares to NTL Coventry who have so far led me to a near 10 year boycott of NTL.

Indeed, there is no charge for early notice, only early termination. You should always give 30 days notice 30 days before the end of your minimum term. Them saying you had to pay to do this was a complete lie.

Hell, you could give your notice a year before the end of your contract if you felt like it, they would have to accept it.

Why do people use the word 'scam' when its clearly not the OP was simply not told the truth by an EE representative.

However I have being lied to a few times by EE when it came to unlocking a iPhone 4S as well as changing account details on a secondary line for it to become a primary line so it could be managed by my wife and not me (took 6 months to get it sorted).

I don't think they actually lied, but they certainly intentionally misled.

I now have a PAC code but now have another 30 days of notice to wait out.
Needless to say I was left fuming when this 'best advice' turned out to be a trick.

Where are you looking at going to after EE?

That's pretty much the definition of "lied":

lie
noun
1.
a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood. Synonyms: prevarication, falsification. Antonyms: truth.
2.
something intended or serving to convey a false impression; imposture
3.
an inaccurate or false statement; a falsehood.
4.
the charge or accusation of telling a lie

You could always try contacting them - or write a complaint, being as clear as possible about what happened and without anything too accusatory.

"I think the customer services adviser I spoke to in the first instance was mistaken, and gave me the incorrect advice"

vs

You're a bunch of scamming [expletives here].

Might work, you never know.

This is often discussed over the Moneysavingexpert forums, people either terminate early by requesting their PAC 30 days before the end of their fixed contract and get charged early termination fee or they were told about the early termination fee (but not told to give 30 days notice at that point) and so they wait till the final day to cancel only to be told they need to give 30 days notice.

I assume that if on month 11 you phone EE to give 30 days notice you'd then have to call them on the final day of contract for the PAC otherwise they'd issue the PAC early (still in minimum contract period) and charge you early termination fee etc?

I suspect this is deliberately made awkward

Early termination fee would only be charged from the date you *used* the PAC not when it was issued. If a PAC is issued it has no effect until actually actioned by the destination network.

I'm assuming that may be the case now but I was tricked into not giving 30 days notice which is what I had first intended.
The spiel at the time was that by giving 30 days notice you got a termination fee with the only way to avoid all extra charges being to phone and use that PAC code on the very final day of the contract.

What slightly puzzled me after that conversation was that by them making things a bit awkward to 'penny pinch' they lost that chance to discuss any 'retention' deal.

I just never expected EE to mislead.

So write them a nice letter/email explaining what happened, politely, and see what happens. It's possible that the call centre operative was just useless, rather than malicious.

My two year contract is almost up with Vodafone. Do I need to give notice?
Or doesn't it just run out?

Sorry, I'm a numpty
