Why aren't they any invisible daleks' in the new series?.......
Perhaps the next 4 episodes will reveal this.

After all, the only invisible dalek we've seen so far was dead. And we don't know what killed it.

Have all colour stories been remastered?

Seems strange we're only getting certain episodes in better quality(as far as Horror Channel is concerned!).

According to the SKY EPG, Planet Of The Daleks Episode 3 tomorrow is in black & white, yet we know that episode is back in colour.

Sea Devils wasn't remastered was it? Looked like the 525 line conversions as screened on BBC 2 back in 1992 to me, so I've kept those & deleted the Horror versions even though those were from analogue rather than digital.

were they really the 525 line versions converted to 625 line? weren't they filmed in 625?
I know early on the BBC did film some programs in 525 line and converted them to 625, as early converters only went from 525 to 625, did some Doctor Who episodes suffer from this too?

gives details of how each of the stories was restored for DVD release.
"Planet" is part of the "Dalek War Boxset" (http://www.purpleville.pwp.blueyonde...alekWarDVD.htm)

What I mean is they were filmed in 625, converted to 525 for US sales.

Recovered copies were converted back from 525 to 625 lines, but they didn't look like the 625 versions!

Again the Restoration Team website mentioned, will explain this better.

Thank you thats very informative, Im sure Ive been pointed to that website for other stories, or the description of the vidfire process, which is a good idea restoring the original interlacing!

Ah I see well episode 3 wont be like that as it came from the 16mm B&W film, I suppose the Horror channel dont have the new restored colour version though!

Episode 3 is now showing in colour, but it does look different to the earlier ones.

As far as I know, all those Pertwee episodes that had lost the original colour tapes, have now all been restored or colourized in some way or other.

the restored colouring looked alright, its odd that the horror channel still said it was B&W in the synopsis though!

Maybe they took the wrong episodes from the can.

Just an oddity, in Sky-plussing Planet Of The Daleks all six episodes recorded ok but the second episode on all three days showed in my planner as PART REC Start missed, despite the box being in standby and no other recordings taking place at the time. I've been recording the afternoon showings whilst at work and it's only happened on POTD and none of the previous stories.

Hey

I have recorded the showings that were on over easter weekend, about 21 hours worth !!!!

I have a collection of avi's etc of the classic who, and was hoping to replace these with the copies recorded recently. But will they be better quality???? I know that they will only be 576, but will they be near dvd quality compared to what I have, maybe VHS rips ???

I do not know the source of my copies, as I obtained them from a friend, and have not watched past series 9/Doc Three yet.....

Matt

Yes the ones on Horror are the restored versions but dont chuck your old stuff out yet Horror hasnt shown every single episode, they only have 30 different (multi part) stories to show.
I have been watching them and they are of reasonable quality though, even if the channel is in 544x576 res mode as that is 4:3 ratio its alright quality.

Presumably it's just clashing with the end of the previous episode.

How much is missing ? I doubt it's more than a few seconds.

What I do is manually set up a single recording to cover both. Alternatively you could use the +1 repeat an hour later.

which ones? remember that with so much material being lost and then recovered, the recovered content might not be so good anyway, or be in their original form but damaged and just needed a repair.
They are never going to be as good as say film recovered from years ago, I personally think they look good for how old they are.

Some of the Planet of The Daleks episodes looked sparkly and grainy. Even the opening titles didn't look remastered.

That's odd. They've must have bought Pts1-2 4-6 unrestored and Pt3 restored in colour (from the DVD)!

Thats odd, I will give you that episode 3 might have looked grainy as that was restored from a 16mm B&W print, thats the episode they recovered the colour on.
Not sure if the otheres recovered from NTSC 525, but if they were then reverse standards conversion would have been used, but that wouldnt have made them grainy just lacking a small bit of information with the loss of some lines when originally converted to 525.

Remember that these early episodes were stored in an analogue format until recently (thats the last 10-15 years that they would have been transferred to a digital format) and each time analogue tape gets played it degrades and of course over time it degrades too.
Yes Im sure that digital tape degrades too, but the content wont degrade unless it cant be read.
I would hope that some of the analogue degrading can be cleaned up, but I would think there is only so much cleaning up that can be done and that they will come to a point it cant be improved upon any more.

With the titles, I know they rebuild them from scratch but I would have thought that they would want to keep the look they originally had.

The other five PotD episodes survive on PAL colour tapes. There was no need for NTSC retro-conversion. In fact the series didn't make it to America till after ep3 was lost.

Nothing missing at all as the second recording starts on the adverts between the two episodes, as I said it's just an oddity as there's no obvious reason for it, also it's only happened on POTD, didn't happen on any previous stories, nor on parts 1 and 2 of Green Death yesterday.

Interesting that the Brigadier always "dresses for dinner", even when eating quorn at a hippy commune.

Jon Pertwee:
7th May 3 Doctors
9th May Planet of the Daleks
14th May Green Death
19th May Death to the Daleks
21st May Planet of the Spiders

Tom Baker:
26th May The Ark in Space
28th May Genesis Of The Daleks
2nd June Planet of Evil
4th June The Android Invasion

Apart from the 7 we had at Easter they are clearly going in chronological order. We will have had 2 Hartnell, 2 Troughton and 8 Pertwee stories.

Given that we've been promised 30, I would guess about 10 Tom Baker but only a few from the last 3 doctors.

Rather disappointing the low number from Hartnell & Troughton since I was too young to see them first time around.
I wonder if its possible to see beyond the Tom Baker story The Android Invasion on the 4th June?
