Johnny- "I can get married now mum to the man of my dreams."

Linda- "But I always wanted to help in putting the dress together for my daughter-in-law, how can I do that now?".

*Linda runs off crying*

I'm not usually one for putting in references for the sake of it like they did with the Royal Wedding, Micheal Jackson and the UK floods. I mean I don't mind if it naturally comes up in the conversation, but it's usually done in a contrived way on EE.

However, when concerning an important issue like the legalisation of gay marriage, then I think they should mention it as it help promote and highlight it to viewers.

"The legalisation of same-sex marriage ends the last major legal discrimination against gay people in England and Wales. Scotland will follow later this year. Sadly, Northern Ireland remains a bastion of homophobia.

"Same-sex marriage is an unstoppable global trend because love and commitment are universal human traits, regardless of sexual orientation or nationality. No ignorance or prejudice can hold back the triumph of love."

Tatchell spot on as usual, wonderful message.

I have a friend from Northern Ireland who told me pretty much the same thing, saying it's like going back decades when it comes to gay issues in many places. Blame religion and the batshit insane DUP.

Would fit in the Johnny story and as he is training to be a lawyer I am sure he'd love to point out the technicalities. Of course it actually became legal a while back but in practice you have to register notice of marriage (15/16 days?) so its only now become possible to have the ceremonies

Is it really the BBC's job to help promote gay marriage?

I'd like to see Tina saying she might marry Tosh on Eastenders, much to Linda's horror then Johnny joins in. Linda is a real homophobe and her attitude needs to change with the times as gay people are not going away.

It would be nice to see more of Tina and Tosh now as a couple although I can't help thinking Tosh won't be around for long though and I really hope Johnny has some romance this year..we need to see same sex relationships valued as much as opposite sex ones especially now as gay marriage has been legalised.

Are you serious? In what world is gay marriage being made legal more important than the UK floods.

Would be surprised if Corrie down the line don't marry either Sean or Todd to anoher man. Or wait a minute Sophie could get married to Maddie

The floods are unfortunate and no doubt big news. EE did well to reference them but bad weather is not out the norm for UK. It's not the first time we've been hit with storms and flooding which have made the headlines.

The legalisation of gay marriage is bigger news. It's a huge landmark, or some could say breakthrough, for the UK. This legalisation is effectively making history and will change the lives of many.

In the real world.

It's an historical, potentially life-changing and a very important breakthrough in equality and gay rights.

I agree, this is a landmark day and will go down in history.

The fact is that France and now the UK have legalised same-sex marriage over the last year and it will be hugely influential in the rest of Europe considering these two countries are among the most powerful states within Europe. I predict Germany will be soon to follow because most of Western Europe has now legalised equal marriage.

Have you and Maurice set the day for your wedding yet?

YES. This is such a huge thing to happen (gay myself, happily in a civil partnership, but feel it is important as a country that we are becoming more accepting [I know I'm now opening myself up to hate as it "isnt that important" but.. idec.] of these prevalent issues) and I do hope it is mentioned and as said above, could fit in with Johnny being a lawyer etc. Hope it gets mentioned

I think it's probably more likely to be mentioned by Masood, or to Masood, about Syed and Christian.

Good points.

Anyway - personally I don't really think that it's about a case of one issue [X being more important then Y] being more important than another issue like gay marriage vs the floods, in this case.

They're all important, and of equal importance - but the issue of gay marriage in the UK is very important and significant, to quite frankly a lot of people in the UK (and elsewhere) so on that basis it is landmark news whereas the floods are an example of severe and freak weather in the UK - which has happened before.

Welcome to the threads, by the way, newbie.

There is no "need" at all, it will be highlighted in the news anyway.

However, I like when Eastenders does this, adding in little snippets of realism into the show. It makes the show more relatable to viewers too imo.
