Was only watching the Horror of Frankenstein last night on the Horror Channel and commented to my wife that she hadn't been up to much lately. Very sad 74 isn't old these days.

Very sad news. Regardless of the merits of the stories she appeared in, I thought her performances were very good. Particularly liked the delivery of the Rani's little asides like "Cretin." and "Pretentious is the word." Always chuckled at her imitation of Mel, including silly jaunty walk. Great ITC and Hammer stalwart as well. RIP.

Just reading about her. Her only son committed suicide in 2012 and from the cause of death reported, it seems that she never got over losing him.

Very sad indeed.

Sad news indeed.

I was always in awe of the way that she took a (face it) dreadful role, and somehow elevated it into something so much better than it deserved to be.

The fact that even today people are always clamouring for the return of the character is a true testament to the skill and presence she displayed.

Very sad 74 is young these days. I mainly remember her in dynasty where she played a similar over the top role as the rani.

Huh? Disliking one character she played doesn't equate to a dislike of her, why exactly would people backpedal? And I find it highly unnecessary for you to try to turn a thread like this into an opportunity to take shots at other fans.

Anyway, back on topic, this surprised me. RIP.

What a bizarre thing to post.

Showing respect for Kate and admiration for her performance doesn't somehow alter my opinion that the stories featuring the Rani were very poorly written and directed.

Posters on the DS forums seem obsessed with the infantile notion that criticism equals hatred. It's perfectly possible to criticise the Rani stories without being some sort of foaming-at-the-mouth "hater".

No need for that.
I've seen Kate in various roles and she was always good and usually very entertaining. Regardless of my views on the character of the Rani, there's no doubt that Kate gave cracking performances, in what were otherwise poor stories, and it's very sad that she's now gone.

I liked Mark of the Rani!
It's probably my favourite Colin Baker story.

Time and the Rani wasn't good but Kate O'Mara as the Rani was great in both.

I thought Mark of the Rani was one of Colin's better stories and better than quite a few featuring some of the other Doctors. Gorgeous location filming too. I can even forgive the dreadful attempts at Geordie accents.
