Was only watching the Horror of Frankenstein last night on the Horror Channel and commented to my wife that she hadn't been up to much lately. Very sad 74 isn't old these days.
Very sad news. Regardless of the merits of the stories she appeared in, I thought her performances were very good. Particularly liked the delivery of the Rani's little asides like "Cretin." and "Pretentious is the word." Always chuckled at her imitation of Mel, including silly jaunty walk. Great ITC and Hammer stalwart as well. RIP.
R.I.P Kate - another Doctor Who legend taken from us too soon, 74 isn't that old these days hope she is at peace now, thoughts and prayers with her family and friends

Huh? Disliking one character she played doesn't equate to a dislike of her, why exactly would people backpedal? And I find it highly unnecessary for you to try to turn a thread like this into an opportunity to take shots at other fans.

It isn't is it. Sad news, condolences to her loved ones.

What a bizarre thing to post.
Showing respect for Kate and admiration for her performance doesn't somehow alter my opinion that the stories featuring the Rani were very poorly written and directed.
Posters on the DS forums seem obsessed with the infantile notion that criticism equals hatred. It's perfectly possible to criticise the Rani stories without being some sort of foaming-at-the-mouth "hater".

No need for that.
I've seen Kate in various roles and she was always good and usually very entertaining. Regardless of my views on the character of the Rani, there's no doubt that Kate gave cracking performances, in what were otherwise poor stories, and it's very sad that she's now gone.

I thought Mark of the Rani was one of Colin's better stories and better than quite a few featuring some of the other Doctors. Gorgeous location filming too. I can even forgive the dreadful attempts at Geordie accents.
