In light of the fact that we have lost two Doctor Who greats within few days, I thought I'd set up this thread so that we've got a place to keep all messages of good will to the sadly departed cats and crew.

On this note R.I.P. Kate 0'Mara and Derek Martinus

I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately as time goes on, we are going to lose a lot more former original cast members and production staff, so a thread like this is very useful.

Perhaps a moderator could 'pin' this somewhere.

RIP Derek and Kate.

Over the years, we have lost a lot of cast and crew. Some of them have a 'special' place in our hearts.

So, to: Nicholas Courtney, Elisabeth Sladen, Caroline John, Mary Tamm, Barry Letts, Bernard Horsfall, Bill Hartnell, Pat Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Derek Martinus and Kate O'Mara.

R.I.P. to all of you. We miss you dearly!

It is really sad that we have lost so many people from the worlds of DW. Lis Sladen more so, as she seemed to touch us so much. Se should've been able to appear in the 50th special, but she was so cruelly taken away from us before her time.

Yes, Particularly a shame about her passing before the 50th, she was the one and only person who had a comfortable place in classic who and new who alike, she was a personified bridge between the two eras and as such feel she would have been the most deserving person to have had a role in it. Alas it was not to be.

On the subject of missed opportunities I can never understand why they didn't get the brigadier to appear in new who while they had the chance. It was a bit annoying that they got him for the Sarah Jane Adventures, which obviously proved he was fit and willing to reprise his role, yet not actually for the main show, which should have been more important. In particular the Sontaran two parter would have been brilliant for him to appear in, as it was largely set at a unit base. 10 himself was even disappointed that he wasn't there at the start of the episode.

Yes, and originally Martha Jones was meant to have that role in Sarah Jane Adventures over him too, but was unable to because of filming commitments. I'm just thankful he got to appear one last time in the New Who universe in some form.

Even if he had a part written for him in the sontaran 2 parter there would be no guarantee he would have been available on those shooting days and no guarantee he would have been healthy enough for such more demanding schedule than what he did in sja. What he did in sja was only a few scenes and could be shot in 1 day. Having him in the unit base for the sontaran 2 parter would have recquired more work as a lot of the plot occurs there and more strenuous schedule which nick may have not have been healthy enough. I'm just glad he got the opportunity to appear in the New who universe. There is plenty of classic characters not gotten the opportunity.

In the end I think it was rather nice that The Sarah Jane Adventures got a bit of an exclusive with him - it added to the legacy of the show.
I believe there were plans for the Brig to appear in Doctor Who at some point in Series 4, though he had been too unwell to film at the time. Similarly I believe RTD had wanted him back for SJA: Series 3's The Wedding of River Song and Series 4's Death of the Doctor stories - again he was too unwell and they resorted to the 'stranded in Peru' device to explain his absence from those events. I'm happy the legacy of his character lives on in Kate Stewart - I'm hoping we get to see more of her in future, particularly as I love her character but didn't enjoy either of the episodes she's appeared in.

This page should be PINNED! A lot of Doctor Who actors/cast/directors etc are getting on a bit! I don't wish death on ANY of them - but it happens!
I am sorry that Lis Sladen passed away, along with Nicholas Courtney and Caroline John in the past couple of years - and Romana ....I'm ashamed I cannot remember her name!

I know its very well intentioned but what an oddly morbid thread this is. Surely we can stretch to a new thread every time we lose one of the cast and crew rather than bunging them in a glorified obits section?

I agree. When a main character actor or influential behind the scenes person passes away, they should be worth their own thread.

I don't know if any of you remember, or even knew, that a few months ago Matt Smith recorded a special message for 4 year old Jack Robinson who had an in-operable brain tumour.

Anyway, last week Jack died, so I would just like to pay my respects to a fellow Whovian. It's such a shame when someone so young dies before they've even had a chance to live.

More details here.

Adding another name to this thread now. Edna Doré, who played Maeve Griffiths in Fear Her nearly eight years ago, died on 11th April. She will be sorely missed.

No, that's right it doesn't. I can remember being told the news by my mother, at around 8.30pm, the day the news broke out. She was reading the BBC News website at the time.

After I found out, I was in shock, and felt quite numb. After about twenty minutes, I made some excuse, went upstairs, and just burst into tears. It took about five minutes for the tears to completely stop. I had no idea that Lis had even been ill for months beforehand.

What is even more sad is, that Lis hadn't even finished filming Series 5 of SJA. Only three two-part stories had been filmed. There was supposed to be three more two-parters, but it was not to be. More guest stars were lined up to film their parts too.

Indeed, it is very upsetting. We missed out on seeing Mr Smith turn human, Clyde and Rani's central episode /(which was re-written and used in Wizards Vs Aliens last year) and and the epic finale which would have shown the Trickester return once more. All these stories sound amazing and it's a huge shame that we'll never get to see them. What made it even more upsetting is what (Lis's daughter) Sadie said in an interview (DW magazine) - "When mum became ill and realised that she wouldn't be able to complete the series, she was more upset about that than a lot of other things. She was absolutely devastated. She felt like she was letting a lot of people down. She cared about it very much."

Just reading that made my eyes water. It really describes Lis as a person who was always willing to deliver and put other people first. It was unfair and far too soon for her to be taken away. I can't believe it's been three years since she left us. It still hurts and it doesn't seem real.

I echo this! Despite not being able to participate in later episodes, I think it's great that we got to see Nicholas Courtney in action one more time in "Enemy Of The Bane". I wasn't aware of his passing until a month later or so. Horrible to think that both him and Lus passed away so near to each other and in the same year.

But at least he lived to see his DW work rediscovered and appreciated.
