CS: Emily Bishop to leave street in summer - CONFIRMED
Absolutely PATHETIC news. I don't know why I didn't see it coming with bloody Blackburn in charge - first he axes Dennis Tanner instead of giving him something to do, now he's getting rid of Emily Bishop? Seriously?! There'll be no older characters left by the time he's through with the show. I really wouldn't be surprised to see Rita leaving next - the drink driving arrest is the perfect excuse, eh, Blackburn?
![]() (from the Daily Mail): CORRIE bosses have sensationally axed long-standing resident Emily Bishop, the Daily Mail can confirm. The elderly widower, played by Eileen Derbyshire since 1961, will leave the show during the summer, a Coronation Street spokesman confirmed today. According to show insiders, programme producer Stuart Blackburn is keen to halt a minor ratings slide which saw last Friday's 8:30pm episode beaten by EastEnders for the first time in over a year. As part of what staff as referring to as "Blackburn's masterplan", several older stars are being given the axe in order to save costs following the show's move to purpose-built studios at MediaCity in Salford. It is also understood Blackburn is keen to "refocus" the Street's image and utilise its younger cast more. The former Emmerdale producer has already axed Dennis Tanner, played by Philip Lowrie, who first appeared in Coronation Street's launch episode in 1960. According to relatives, Miss Derbyshire was left shaken by the controversial decision and plans to organise a tribunal against the show for unfair dismissal. completely believed it.There never used to be so much sex and violence in Corrie. It use to be what ITV still claim it is - "Coronation Street is the story of the everyday lives of ordinary folk living in a northern town called Weatherfield." Not any more thanks to idiots like Blackburn. |

There was me thinking he'd decided to turn it into an Eastenders clone. Oh! he already has.

It use to be what ITV still claim it is - "Coronation Street is the story of the everyday lives of ordinary folk living in a northern town called Weatherfield." Not any more thanks to idiots like Blackburn. Actually, Blackburn has restored some of the community feel to the show, in my view. |
