Having followed the discussions over on WPCentral I am not so sure I am. I hope my fears are based on no more than having to get used to the new way of doing things and not that some stuff I do now will no longer be possible.
ETA: and there are separate apps for music and video now, but you can still play everything you could before |

I only turn wi-fi off when listening to the radio on line while on the road as trying to jump between wi-fi and mobile connectons automatically seem to confuse all the radio player apps and drops the stream whereas they seem to manage hopping between mobile masts more seamlessly (albeit with occasional interruptions).
(mainly using BBC iPlayer Radio app for TMS at the moment as a backup to dodgy DAB reception round here) |

I hope Windows phones gain market share (even though they are not my cup of tea). Competition is always a good thing and keeps everyone on their toes!!

One thing missing is you cannot turn off Wi-Fi automatically when the phone goes idle. I find it's actually a good thing. I do not see any impact on battery life and I save mobile data. A nice feature (as an option) would be if the phone remembered locations of Wi-Fi networks it was connected to and turn on Wi-Fi automatically when in the area.

One of the developer preview builds had an option of "turn WiFi back on when near my favourite places" - I think it's a Cortana feature as now that I've gone back to UK English and turned off Cortana, that feature has gone.

And not just any hotspot, but selected ones. At home, at work, etc.

I'd like to have that without talking to that woman

If you speak to her, she will speak back but you can also type your questions in which case her answers will come back on screen silently. Excellent to have a voice assistant but not look like a tit in public. |

http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Other-D...re/td-p/700683 http://www.nokia.com/global/support/...ity-in-europe/ Cortana preview should drop in the next few days. Shame we don't get Jen Taylor, as it sorta defeats the brand purpose. But I wouldn't say no to Joanna Lumley telling me directions.

How about Father Jack instead of Cortana for Ireland. A typical conversation would go like this:
FJ: WHAT? Phone owner: where is the nearest restaurant? FJ: That would be an ecumenical matter! ![]() BTW I don't even have the Cyan FW yet and there's already GDR1 preview around the corner, should be available this coming week. |

I am on 8.1.
Cortana is very very good. I've used Siri and Google and prefer Cortana. Even commands like, "remind me to get milk" will display a pop up reminder when your in the car park of the supermarket. You can turn wi-fi off and see all the notifications in the notification centre too, which is a massive step forward for this OS. Also, we see quiet hours introduced, folders on the main screen and the ability to control the ringer and the app sounds independently. Thumbs up! |
