Hi members

Im looking for advice on my set up. I currently have a 5.1 surround setup with a denon amp and kef speakers but its now time to change things around without having all the wires. I was looking at a bose 2.1 setup for £550 but don't know if I can justify paying that sort of money for a sound I might not be happy with. Ive been told that with my setup just now I can have all my speakers sitting along the top of my tv unit and that will produce a better sound than the bose. Has anyone done anything like this that can give me some advice or should I be looking at soundbars? The decorating has to be done and its a strange shaped living room with a corner bay window.

Thanks in advance for any replys

Mark

Going from Denon/Kef to Bose sounds (sic) like a bit of a downgrade to me.

If decorating why not hide the wires?

You can run the wires under the carpet or use micro trucking on laminate/wooden flooring, channel wires in walls where required.

There's plenty of help too for positioning speakers in odd shaped rooms.

A bit of DIY and good advice on speaker placement has to be better than going to a Bose 2.1 setup surely....

Why not look at a 5.1 set up with wireless rears??

Sony do a great system that can be had in either black or white for approx £500:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-BDVN710...dp/B00CFYS3XA/
it pretty much gets 5 stars in any reviews I have seen though Sony have just launched the 2014 version the Sony BDVN7200W.

Or Philips have a new system where you simply lift the top off the front speakers to give you the wireless surround if and when needed - the Fidelio E5:

The Sony system is not a true wireless system - the rear speakers plug into a receiver which is placed at the rear of the room, the receiver also requires a power source.

Phillips system £600.

Hi thanks for the replys.

The issue with my setup is that the way the living room is going to be with the sofa not against any wall so my rear speakers will be about 4 feet behind the sofa so I don't think that would be really suitable for the speakers that's why I was looking at a 2.1 setup. But I can say I will not be going for Bose was only looking at that because it looked as if it would have been perfect for me. Really don't want to get rid of my equipment as it cost a lot of money. But really struggling with what to do. I can Show a diagram of my living room and how it will look if anybody can give me any pointers. Does anyone know how good a 5.1 setup would sound if all speakers are on the same shelf that's 6 foot in length?

Better the rears being 4ft behind you than on the wall with the sofa against it.

The amp will determine the levels/distances and delays which will give good surround f/x.

All speakers on the same shelf will sound absolutely terrible, a 5.1 system is not designed to be listened to like that.

Post a diagram of the room, plenty here will give you good advice on speaker placement...

You can't. you have to post it to an image hosting site then post the link to the image on here.

But it doesn't matter if the speakers are 4 feet behind you, that should be OK. It's probably a similar distance to the fronts, if not closer than the fronts.

Behind the sofa the walls not that long from left to right I have a 2ft fish tank then it's my kitchen door then nothing for about 3 foot then it's my living room door. Would you think that would still be ok to put 2 rear speakers that close together?

just experiment ........ tweak whatever setup adjustments are available .....

problem with home cinema is its essentially "surround stereo". 5.1 or otherwise. the haas effect doesnt work in living rooms as they are too small ......
