EastEnders - a pleasure to watch.
So, I watched an episode of EastEnders today.
All I can say is, what a pleasure. I've never been much of a fan of EastEnders, having not watched 'properly' since the late 1990s. There has been lots of talk about the show on DS recently, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did. Potentially Eastenders must have one of the strongest casts in its history. A powerful blend of long-standing cast members of 15-20 years, some well-established families and individuals who have been around for 10+ years and some very good newcomers. I was particularly taken by the natural way that the scripts had been crafted. The episode I watched was from 1 April and nothing particularly major happened, but I genuinely felt captivated by seeing the characters going about their daily lives. Sharon and Phil having a meat pie and a quick drink, Max bemoaning Carol's tea making skills and the gentle but funny meal featuring Ian, Denise, Masood, Jane and Shabnam were all little gems. The scripts were, in my view, very good. They took daily goings on - especially the tea making comment - and wove the storyline through quite delicately. Even small details such as Max eating a microwave meal for one were nice to see. The other interesting element was Sharon's new bar - The Albert - which seems to be completely reinvigorating the show and really starting to show a more believable representation of London. The new set looks fantastic and the interior, with its multiple rooms and nooks and crannies has the potential for some very good drama. Positioning Sharon as the person to have brought this new edge to Walford is also very positive for her and the show. As Phil commented, she's been in the business for years, so having Sharon as the character that 'rejuvenates' the area gives her a powerful edge as EastEnders moves into an exciting new period. I'll certainly be watching again. |

I'll certainly be watching again. We got to see some of the new sets (Sharon's Bar) but there was a nice mix of cast which is something Dom has got right. We are starting to learn more about the carters now too. Tuesday's episode did continue from Monday however. Tonights episode is one to watch and it seems we might get a few clues towards the big Easter storyline. Also agree about the cast. I have watched for 20 years and this is the best cast I remember. There is a nice mixture too. EastEnders Is starting to use location scenes a lot more now too. we seem to be going outside of Walford weekly right now

It is a pleasure to watch. Having started properly watching in 2008, whilst watching it on and off since 2002, I am immensely happy that DTC is at the helm. Sure their are SL that are over exaggerated (Stacey's Return) , but at least their are Storylines! Also I agree with "strongest cast in years" point. Not only has it had realism injected into it, but we've got well rounded character leading potentially big and minor sls.

What a lovely post Korner Kabin! excellent points on all counts. It makes such a change from the moaning and groaning that goes on here at times!
The cast and writing have been brilliant since DTC took over IMO. Granted, there were a few teething problems but overall he's done a fantastic job. Characterisation is one of his strong points. I also love the fact that there are loads more night scenes and the Vic has become the heart of the show again. |

What a lovely thread. And I completely agree, the cast is near perfect at the moment. That hasn't been the case for a number of years.
Stay with us, it gets fun over the next few weeks. |

I love night scenes too, not sure why. Lol
Remember under Lorraine, they'd be heading into the nightclub in broad daylight

I agree. It's nice to be reminded that outside of that overbearing Stacey plot and tedious 'dead Nick' stuff, which dominated all through March, the show is actually very good. I can't really fault the Carters, Beales, Masoods, Butcher/Spraggans and Mitchells. It's just those that AREN'T in those units that seem to be hindering the show quite a bit.
Jake is an absolute waste of airtime, as proven tonight where he was used as nothing but a 'red-herring' for the Lucy plot. Aleks is no better. PlotDevices R'Us the pair of them. Kat and Alfie I LOVED at the start of the year, generally happy and 'refreshed' but all that went on in march with them has pushed them towards the bottom of the heap, Alfie especially. Stacey just doesn't seem necessary either. Those three could do with being offscreen for a few months. But yeah, nothing that just a few more axings (or consistantly good writing for those 'damaged' characters) won't sort out

Thanks for the nice comments everyone, it's nice to see a nice thread on here for a change.
I was also really impressed by the Carters. I've read a lot about them on DS over the past few months and the generally positive comments seem very much appropriate. Their scenes were a gentle roller coaster in the episode I watched, but each character was shown from their own viewpoint. I really felt something for the family. I also think that the casting of Shirley's sister - can't remember the character's name, sorry - was fantastic as the two really do look like sisters! Danny Dyer also looked marvellous in those jeans

Not a regular in the soaps forum but got to agree with all the positive comments here. The characterisation is particularly strong for the Carters who I'm really enjoying watching. Timothy West is fantastic as the wily old dad.
