Which operating system is your desktop PC running ? Windows of some sort ?

In which case you could just attach the laptop drive (you will probably need an 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor) and use it as a second drive. Or you could make it the only drive in which case you will need to format and install an operating system on it.

Will warn you that laptop hard drives are not as fast as desktop ones generally so you might go down the first route of using it as a second drive if possible.

This makes sense.
Desktop is windows 7 and belongs to my parents

I will probably do this, install as a second drive and just choose to boot from it, this way nothing on their PC will change and as I'm occasional use it won't matter being slower, it'll just be like using the overheating laptop it was already in.

Thanks for the help, will try this and see how I go - may return in a few weeks if it doesn't work for me!
