Great news from a British perspective as well - Stanford and Holland finish 2nd & 3rd in the Grand Final, thereby claiming the two Olympic berths they earned in the Rio test event for themselves.
Excellent omen for Rio, there should be medals there if they can both stay fit. Stanford has had so many injuries, but I still think she can beat Jorgensen if she gets her tactics right - she was doing far too much work during the cycling phase yesterday.

Disappointment in the canoe double, British teams only 5th and 6th. But Olympic place guaranteed, unfortunately only one per country this time.

And disappointment for the women as well - 7th, 9th and 10th but again the Olympic spot secured. Selection races will be in October.

Johnny Brownlee only 12th in Chicago, so British Olympic qualification is on hold till next year. Mola won the race, but Gomez was 2nd, so secures the overall World Champs.

Unfortunately our ladies can't quite emulate the men, 4th for Kimberley Woods and 5th for Eilidh Gibson in the women's C1

In a sense, it was not dissimilar to 2012 - except on that occasion, both medals were won in the men's C-2 final.

Good to see qualification was secured in all four Olympic disciplines.

We now have a couple of boring months until the winter sports get properly started. No more athletics, the big outdoor Olympic sports are over, cycling coming to an end....

European Table Tennis Championships start today in Ekaterinberg, Russia (still trying to live down its reputation as the town where they shot the Tsar and his family.)

http://www.ettu.org/en/events/europe...l-information/

Live multi-channel streaming on laola1.tv
http://www.laola1.tv/de-at/ettu-euro...chaft/203.html

Eurosport has coverage of finals only.

As far as I can see this is not an Olympic Qualifying Tournament, other than for points on overall world ranking.

On that note the London Open took place yesterday. Max Whitlock is back on form after his Glandular fever earlier in the year scoring 91.6 overall. Nile Wilson another one who is rediscovering his best form was runner up.

The World Boxing Championships [ie Men only, there is a separate tournament for women] get underway in Doha tomorrow, 5-18 October.

It's an early Olympic qualifying opportunity - criteria are:

The top three boxers from five weight categories (bantamweight, lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and middleweight), the gold and silver medalists from three divisions (light flyweight, flyweight, and light heavyweight), and the champions in two heaviest classes (heavyweight and super heavyweight)

British team is:

49 kg – Harvey HORN
52 kg – Muhammad ALI
56 kg – Qais ASHFAQ
60 kg – Joseph CORDINA
64 kg – Pat McCORMACK
69 kg – Joshua KELLY
81 kg – Joshua BUATSI
91+ kg – Joseph JOYCE

TV Coverage is BBC Red Button, starting from next weekend.

The flyweight boxer probably has a few detractors that really dislike him already, just because of his name. Mind you, boxing isn't for the faint hearted...

Judging by this Wiki page, it looks like there are many ways to earn an Olympic berth.

British team for the Weightlifting World Champs in Houston, Texas in November named. It's a team of nine people, much more than usual, thanks to improved sponsorship.

http://britishweightlifting.org/news...championships/

Qualifying is hugely complicated, but it looks like we need to combine some good results here with the European Champs in Norway next year to get more than just the minimum quota of 1 man 1 woman. Doesn't look very likely, we'd need to gain about 30 places in the world rankings as far as I can make out.

Not very good news for our boxers - no-one got to the Olympic qualifying stages. Best performance was Joe Joyce the cruiserweight, who got a bronze, but needed a gold to qualify. More chances in the spring.

British team named for the Gymnastics World Champs in Glasgow at the end of the month.

Joyce is actually a super-heavyweight.* Just noticed the Brits are competing as one team (as they do in the Olympics), whereas they fought for their constituent countries in previous WCh.

The Irish have two finalists in Michael Conlan (bantamweight) and Joe Ward (middleweight), both of whom are seeking to become their country's first male world champion.

The women will have their turn in February.

[* Equivalent of heavyweight in the professional ranks]

Michael Conlan wins the bantanweight world title! He had already secured Olympic qualification, but it's good to see that Katie Taylor will have a fellow world champion for company in Rio.

Busy with other things, but the Taekwando Grand Prix Series was in Manchester last week. 3 medals for Team GB - Gold!! for Jade Jones and silvers for Lutalo Muhammad and Bianca Walden.

First stage Olympic qualifying is based on overall world ranking with a maximum of one person per country per weight. There are also regional qualifying tournaments. Countries can qualify in all events, unlike some sports where there are overall caps.

The ISSF World Cup Final (Shotgun) is currently underway in Nicosia. AFAIK, this event has no impact on Olympic qualification but it's good news all the same as Amber Hill and Steven Scott won the women's skeet and men's double trap disciplines respectively. For the record, both shooters have already won quotas for GB.

Though she is yet to qualify to Rio, Keri-Anne Payne ends her season on a high after winning the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup (Round 10) event in Hong Kong.

Not long now until the World Gymnastics championships start in Glasgow on Friday. A good summary of the competition format & schedule is detailed in this blog -

http://fulltwist.net/worlds-2015-all-you-need-to-know/

The GB women have their qualification on Friday afternoon & the men have their qualification session on Sunday morning. Both will be aiming to qualify for the team final which will secure the team spot for Rio. They should both achieve this and the Men will be hoping for a team medal. With the US team having a number of injuries that has only increased their chances.

With Max Whitlock now back to good form following his bout of glandular fever earlier this year he will also be targeting another All Around medal and he will lead the challenge for apparatus medals on Pommels too.

Will be flying up to Glasgow next week to attend all the final sessions. I had never been to Glasgow before the Commonwealths and liked it so am looking forward to seeing more of the city this time

2015 WCh timetable
Distribution of Olympic berths

The first 4 days are dedicated to qualification. The top 8 teams qualify for the team all-around finals (days 5 & 6), top 24 competitors qualify for the individual all-around finals (days 7 & 8) and top 8 competitors on each piece of apparatus qualify for the individual apparatus finals (days 9 & 10). The individual finals are subject to a limit of 2 competitors per country, so those just outside the top 24 or 8 respectively may qualify as well.

Qualification for Rio is as follows:
Following the qualifying round of competition at the 2015 World Championships, the top eight men’s and women’s teams will obtain a team berth (five places) for the Olympic Games for their countries.

The apparatus finals medallists will also qualify to the Olympic Games, but only if their countries have not already qualified a team.

Therefore, at the end of the 2015 World Championships, between 40 and 52 Olympic berths in women’s gymnastics and between 40 and 58 berths in men’s gymnastics will have been attributed.

The individual gymnasts and the teams that do not qualify directly for the Olympic Games will have a second chance to do so during the Pre-Olympic Test Event in Rio in April.

This second qualification competition is reserved:
• For teams who finished 9th to 16th at the 2015 World Championships
• To 80 individual gymnasts, 40 men and 40 women. Countries that finish 17th-24th in the qualification competition at the World Championships will have the right to send two individuals to the Test Event. Gymnasts from nations outside the top 24 teams, according to their individual classifications in the same qualifying competition, will have the right to send a single gymnast to the Test Event. Brazil, as the Olympic host country, also has priority if at least one of its competitors has not already qualified.

It should be noted that the gold medallists in individual event finals from the 2015 World Championships and two gymnasts from countries that have already qualified teams to the Olympic Games may take part at the Test Event, though their results will not be taken into account when it comes to Olympic qualification.

Long way to go in qualifying but after completing their qualification session the GB team are currently 2nd in the standings behind Russia. Romania had a mare and are only in 7th with the likes of USA, China and also German y & Australia who also have a good chance of qualifying if they go well still to come. I suspect Romania will be off to the test event.

Individually the Downie Sisters both had a disappointing time on the bars which means Beckie won't qualify for the apparatus final & Ellie won't make All Around as she's only 3rd of the British girls. Ellie is 2nd in the vault standings though, Ruby Harrold is 3rd on bars & Claudia Fragapane (who has had an ankle injury & didn't compete All Around) is 3rd on floor. The Women's qualifiction won't be complete until tomorrow evening
