Brilliant Max got gold. So pleased he did it.

There is no execution tiebreaker in these WCh, so the bronze medal is awarded to both Harutyun Merdinyan and Kazuma Kaya (just 18 years of age!) for scores of 15.500 each.

Incidentally, GB now have 5 medals in all - better than their previous best of 3 in 2010 and better than the 2012 Olympic haul of 4. Fantastic!

I thought that Louis did the better routine but Max had a higher difficulty.
Congratulations to both of them.

With two competitors to go, there's a three-way tie for gold on women's uneven bars!

Make that a FOUR-way tie with one to go!!!

Are they going to play 4 national anthems, it will take longer than the competition itself.
Edward_Sloley
31-10-2015
Definitely not 4 - only one anthem needed for the Russian pair.

-----

I cannot believe I am about to type this - with a score of 15.366, the women's uneven bars title is shared between Daria Spiridonova, Viktoria Komova, Madison Kocian AND Fan Yilin!! FOUR gold medals, and no silver and bronze medals whatsoever!!

Ruby Harrold scores 14.766 for seventh place.

----

In the Olympics, it would have been gold for Viktoria Komova AND Madison Kocian, bronze for Daria Spiridonova and fourth place for Fan Yilin!

Eleftherios Petrounias wins the men's rings title with a score of 15.800. The Chinese pair of You Hao (silver) and Liu Yang (bronze) strengthen their country's rich history of success with scores of 15.733 and 15.700 respectively.

Time now four the women's uneven bars medal ceremony...hope you guys savoured it, because you'll never see it again in your lifetimes.

Most of today's finals were won by tight margins (a huge understatement as far as uneven bars were concerned!); but the gap between gold and silver on floor was something else thanks to Shirai's D score.

For the record, he's scored 16.1 or better in all three of his routines, which is mind boggling; to a lesser extent, you can also say that about Whitlock's latter two routines on pommel horse as they were scored no lower than 16.1 either. IMO not even Berki could have beaten Whitlock today if he'd qualified, but we'd have witnessed all three medallists scoring 16+.

It's worth mentioning that Whitlock has won 3 medals in these championships despite his mistake on horizontal bar during the all-around final, not to mention it being the second time that Smith has scored 16+ in a global final for a 'minor' medal.

Excellent performances - so encouraging for the future with others coming through and impressing too.

Not often you see a 2 way tie for gold let alone 4

Ri Se-gwang retains his men's vault title with an average of 15.450. Vaulting legend Marian Drăgulescu - in his second comeback at the age of 34 (!) - scores an average of 15.400 for silver, and Donnell Whittenburg scores an average of 15.350 for bronze.
Edward_Sloley
01-11-2015
Another successful title defence - this time it's Biles on beam with a score of 15.358, one full mark ahead of the competition!

Sanne Wevers wins silver with 14.333, Pauline Schäfer wins bronze with 14.133. The podium is notable for lacking any representation by Romania, China or Russia.

01-11-2015
The parallel bars world champion's name is ripe for poor puns, so I'll steer clear of them.

You Hao takes the gold with 16.216 (!), Oleg Verniaiev produces a silver this time with 16.066, and the bronze medal score of 15.966 was produced by both Oleg Stepko and Deng Shudi.

Nile Wilson scores 15.266 for eighth place - a good performance all the same as he is the first ever Brit to have made that final.
Edward_Sloley
01-11-2015
You'll never guess who's just won the women's floor title...

...yup, Simone Biles has done it again with 15.800 - it's her third such title in succession, and a record tenth career title! If she isn't already one of the greats, an Olympic title will surely erase any doubt.

She also has a pair of silvers and bronzes, which means she has won 14 WCh medals in just three years. Astonishing.

Silver goes to Ksenia Afanasyeva with 15.100, bronze goes to Margaret Nichols with 15.000; the Chinese requested an inquiry on Shang's D score but it was rejected. Ellie and Claudia score 14.733 and 14.466 for sixth and seventh place respectively.

-----

Apparently Ellie's leotard is identical to the one that Beth Tweddle wore during her gold medal-winning routine in the 2009 WCh.

Haha, Leyva's dad is pumped after seeing that horizontal bar routine!
Edward_Sloley
01-11-2015
And finally, the men's horizontal bar is done and dusted.

Someone else has just won their tenth career world title with a score of 15.833 - it can only be one man, and it's Kōhei Uchimura once again! He has won 19 WCh medals in all (including 5 silver and 4 bronze) over the past 7 years - if that isn't a record, he must be very close.

Danell Leyva scored 15.700 for silver, and 19 year-old (!) sensation Manrique Larduet scores 15.600 for bronze.

Special mention goes to David McDaid for his knowledge of Japanese and Spanish and making good use of those languages in his interviews with Uchimura and Larduet.

Again, the winning margins were pretty small...in the men's events, anyway.

In their careers, both Uchimura and Biles have contributed to team victories and won the all-around (several times) and half the apparatus titles. They now have 33 WCh medals between themselves (20 of them gold), which is staggering.

Verniaiev has scored at least 16 in all three of his parallel bars routines, and yet none of them would have been high enough to deny You the win - indeed his silver medal score in the final was higher than what Smith got on the pommel horse.

The apparatus medallists (8 men and 2 women) that weren't part of a team that qualified for Rio have earned Olympic berths as individuals.

The first meet of the season in the Swimming World Cup is underway in Doha. Lots of the big names are involved, including some British stars - there are half a dozen other events between now and Christmas.

After the sailors a couple of months ago, Britain's second group of officially-confirmed* athletes with definite places in Rio is the full 4-person 4 event canoe slalom squad. Like the sailors, there's tons of previous Olympic and World Championship medal success.

* There are lots of other people with quota places and presumed slots, but they are still not definitely confirmed by both their Federations and the British Olympic Committee

More selection news, this time the first pre-selection for the Triathlon squad. The four obvious names, really - the Brownlee brothers for the men, Vicky Holland and Non Standford for the women.

http://www.teamgb.com/news/four-brit...-rio-traithlon

Official selection will be next June, but any further names will likely be chosen for their qualities as domestiques for the main players, so will likely be the best swim/cyclists, rather than overall triathletes.

Most likely true for the men as there are no other triathletes with medal potential but not for the women. If Jodie Stimpson or Helen Jenkins were in great form next year there's no way they will be left out for a domestique surely.

Will be interesting to see if they want to go for gold, which will mean having a plan for beating Jorgensen. or to accept any medal, in which case pick the three best. I think back to the men's race in the European Games in Baku where the British team were able to manufacture a gold by having a great tactical plan and using two squad members to wear down the field for the profit of Gordon Benson.
