Top-18 finishes in both outstanding prelims over the next two days will make it a full house.
It almost happened...between Matthew Lee and James Denny, best they could do was 30th place in the last prelim. Even allowing for the fact some of the better-placed nations already have 2 berths, there might not be enough 'leftover' berths to extend that far.

It would have been nice for one of the youngsters to gain experience in that event - that said, it has no impact on medal possibilities for that event as Daley will be in Rio anyway. In any case, GB have claimed no fewer than 11 berths (out of 12) during the qualification window, which is impressive.

In the RS:X World Championships, Nick Dempsey just missed out on a fifth medal as he finishes in fourth place. In the women's race, Bryony Shaw (who is already set for Rio) claimed her third silver medal in four years.

The races were won by Polish sailors Piotr Myszka and Malgorzata Bialecka.

First Triathlon World Series event of the year this weekend, with two full races from Abu Dhabi. Most of the biggest names, British and International, are not going to be there, so the main British interest will be the struggle for the third Olympic place.

The likes of Mario Mola & Richard Murray will be competing in the mens race.

Helen Jenkins & Jodie Simpson are doing the womens race & the choice of the 3rd spot for Rio is likely to be between those 2. Jorgensen not competing but the other top Americans like True & Zafires are.

England's Table Tennis team seem to be doing well at the World Team Champs in Malaysia with a place in the Quarter Finals of the (effectively) First Division, having started from the Second Division.

According to the wiki there's still a long way to go before Olympic qualification is decided, but team world ranking is a factor.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_..._Qualification

Anyone sufficiently up in the sport to tell us what it all means? Unlike some of the teams, we have not imported an entire off-the-shelf squad of Chinese players & coaches, so that has to be good.

YouTube seems to be highlights only

They've now progressed to the semi-finals, which means they've just guaranteed themselves a medal for the first time in 61 years!

The British women have made a strong start to the triathlon season in Abu Dhabi as Stimpson wins the race, followed by Jenkins in third place.

-----

They couldn't get past Japan, but the men's English table tennis team still leave the comp with a well-earned bronze medal. If they don't qualify GB for Rio, I'd be surprised.

Race was affected by a big bike pile-up - which you don't often get in triathlon - coming into the 2nd transition. The GB selectors will be using the upcoming race in the Gold Coast, Australia as the final Olympic decider.

Enjoyed watching (some of) the Triathlon races earlier. Mario Mola won over Richard Murray in an exciting race.

Advantage Jodie in the Women's selection race. Looks back to the sort of form she was in during 2014. Adam Bowden finished outside the top 10. Unless someone races out of their skin in the Gold Coast the 3rd men's pick will almost certainly be a domestique to support the Brownlees

Nice tribute to Laurent Vidal from the athletes on the podium

Bit of gymnastics news Amy tinkler currently competing in the American cup, she's joint third after two rotations. Important for her to impress since she wants one of those 5 spots

Saw some of the Gymnastics. Amy finished 4th with Gabby Douglas winning & Nile Wilson finished 5th. Both Brits seemed to have upgrades in their routines. Amy looked great on beam but unfortunately fell on floor & Nile fell from high Bar

Hadn't caught up on this amidst all the other excitement, but Katie Clarke and Olivia Federici won GB a quota place in the free duet discipline in the synchro swimming qualifying and test tournament in Rio at the weekend.

Bit ridiculous though that they might not get sent by the BOA.

Also Kat Driscoll won a bronze medal in trampoline at the Baku World Cup, although here where no Chinese gymnasts there to put it in context but good none the less

It's fair to say last weekend was a very good one for Team GB.

A few important events this weekend

Modern Pentathlon have their second World Cup of the year, with the Rio test event. It's not a direct Olympic qualifier though. Team GB currently have three Olympic places - Joseph Choong in the men, and Samantha Murray & Kate French for the women. We still have the possibility of more, at the World Championships in Moscow in May and on overall World Ranking on the 1st of June.

Unfortunately TV coverage and streaming has been hopeless for the this sport recently, but there might be videos on YouTube at some point.

British team news - the whole A team will be going.

Gymnastics World Cup from Glasgow.
Another big domestic event in a sport where GB have big medal possibilities

TV coverage - BBC online on Saturday, BBC2 on Sunday.

Diving World Series 1 from Beijing.

If you didn't watch it yesterday or the highlights earlier on BBC it's available on the i-player - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...016-highlights

Max Whitlock won the men's event. No major errors and a good score of 89+ which is a great start to a big year for him. Dan Purvis was 3rd. Claudia Fragapane was 3rd too, she was top scorer on beam & floor but fell on bars. Has put some upgrades in her routines so looking to build from this.

The final World Cup will be next weekend in Stuttgart with Ellie Downie & James Hall. Most of the other top GB gymnasts will be competing in the English Championships in Loughborough ahead of the British Champs next Month.

Results from Rio not every encouraging. Reports are that pretty much everyone struggled with the riding phase, which should normally be one of our strengths.

http://www.pentathlongb.org/news/pos...ult-day-in-Rio

Joseph Choong 13th
James Cooke 19th

Freyja Prentice 17th
Francesca Summers 26th
Samantha Murray 33rd
Kate French 35th.

There was also a Fencing Grand Prix in Havana where Richard Kruse won GOLD!!! in the men's foil. Individual places in Rio depend initially on World Rankings on 4 April 2016, so this is a big boost. You're remember we got the team place by taking Gold in Baku last summer.

Worth adding that both Choong and Summers are barely out of their teens, so their performances were the most creditable in that context (the latter is also world junior champion from last year).

GB Team named for the European Weightlifting Championships, in Norway 10-16 April, our final opportunity to qualify for Rio

https://www.teamgb.com/news/focus-on...or-euro-champs

Qualifying is based on overall team performance, not directly via individuals. The men have to finish in the top seven of the nations not already qualified, the women in the top six. It will be very tight, because pre-qualification has bee dominated by the east European nations, none of the big western teams are qualified yet.

The Women's Champion's Trophy hockey event is in London in June - last big event for Eng/GB; but the men's event which was to be held in Argentina has now been moved, again to London and will also be in June.

Tickets available now; probably be covered on BT. I'm not keen on the Lee Valley arena - there's very little shade should the sun come out, the temporary roof they had in Antwerp wasn't half a blessing when it reached 35c last year!

Yes, The Netherlands (my country) has qualified for the first time ever for the women handball competition in Rio In their qualifiying group, France and Japan will fight it out for the other ticket (probably will go to France).

Which means that we will have two female teams at the games again (after winning gold with both female teams in 2008). We also just missed out with the female football squad and the volleyball women and waterpolo women are still in the race to qualify (which might even make it three or four teams).

News from the British domestic Rowing Trials. The team will be selected, rather than based on Trial results, but the selectors probably won't go too far off the range.

https://www.teamgb.com/news/olympic-...ith-a-flourish

http://www.britishrowing.org/2016/03...ials-conclude/

First World Cup is in Varese, Italy 15-17 April, but the first full-strength team outing will be the European Championships in Brandenberg, 6-8 May.

If anyone's looking for a bit of free sport all weekend, and British interest as Wimbledon are competing, try youtube for https://www.youtube.com/user/eurohockeyleague Wimbledon v Amsterdam 2pm Sat
It's the hockey equivalent of the football European Cup but with more goals and proper penalty shootouts!
