We have got some synchro swimmers, though, that's a rarity!
True but it looks like we didn't even try to qualify an individual spot or a team which is a shame

Am struggling to grasp the concept of individual synchronised swimming, frankly. A bit like wheat-free pasta, which is otherwise known as air.

Hahaiwas talking about rhythmic gymnastics lol but your right individual synchronised swimming wouldn't be nearly as impressive

Looks like GB have acquired another title contender as Alison Young (already Rio-bound) took gold in the Women's Laser Radial World Championships by a point! Apparently she's the first British woman to win a world title in a solo Olympic dinghy class.

The Olympic Torch Lighting ceremony at Olympia is LIVE NOW!!! on YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VprGoZ2dnqs

This hallowed and ancient ritual dates all the way back to 1936 and invented by German film maker Leni Reifenstahl who needed a dramatic and visually striking beginning to her film of the the Berlin Olympics, preferably featuring scantily-clad Greek maidens with no underwear. Once lit, the Olympic flame will be taken on a journey through Greece and eventually to Rio, where something spectacular will happen to it at the climax of the Opening Ceremony.

The European Judo Championships begin in Kazan, Russia, today. A strong British team is present.

https://www.britishjudo.org.uk/news/...-championships

Apart from the host places, qualification is based entirely on World Rankings on 30th May, so many permutations still possible.

Britain gets its first medal in the Judo, SILVER!!! for Colin Oates in the men's -66kg category.

More action this weekend.

Triathlon World Series: Race three from Cape Town on Sunday afternoon, live on BBC Red Button. It's short course sprint racing. British women's team is Jodie Stimpson, Non Stanford and Vicky Holland. Gwen Jorgensen not present, so a good chance of a British win.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/triathlon/36029372
http://wts.triathlon.org/news/articl...e_in_cape_town

Men's team is the Brownlee Brothers and Adam Bowden, going against the strong Spaniards and Vincent Luis of France.

http://wts.triathlon.org/news/articl..._for_cape_town

Diving World Series from Kazan - Britain racking up a lot of minor medals so far, but very ominously China have taken every single Gold in the previous three rounds.

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/fina/...ive.html?id=65

Mountain Bike World Cup from Cairns, Australia, featuring both the Olympic Cross-Country and the non-Olympic Downhill events. Team GB are very strong in the downhill, but a bit feeble in the one that matters.

http://www.uci.ch/mountain-bike/news...e/live-175994/

Fencing - Olympic test event in Rio. Britain have qualified for the men's team foil and individual events, but as far as I can see the qualifying's over and we won't get any more.

I don't see Alistair on the start list now. He said earlier this week that he'd been Ill since arriving in Cape Town so perhaps he's decided to withdraw.

Gomez is certainly keeping his powder dry/keeping everyone guessing this year

Helen Jenkins gets the third place in the women's triathlon team, which seems to be the form choice. Third men's place is left open till after Yokohama.

Kazan seems to be a decent spot for medals this weekend.

Judo
Gibbons v Powell for bronze in the women's -78kg; the latter judoka won, as per Glasgow 2014

Diving
Silver for Mears & Laugher in the men's 3m sync springboard, as well as Couch in the women's 10m platform (career-best performance)
Bronze for Daley & Goodfellow in the men's 10m sync platform

I think it may be more than just current form. Helen proved that Gwen is beatable with a big enough gap coming off the bike into the run, so she made it impossible to be overlooked by the nature of that victory. By being the first one to beat Gwen in a long time also helped make a point that she brings something maybe a bit different and therefore a strong contender for the gold.

I expect Helen (and the other women that have a strong enough run) will see a very strong bike as key to a strategy to beat Gwen on the day. Especially as the Rio course is hilly.

I suppose there are rules but it would make more sense to have a team selected that have a chance of a medal (all 4 of the brits do so should all be in the team) and choose the starting 3 nearer the time, so the best ones on form nearer the time start the race.

Jodie still needs to keep her eye on being in top form for August in case there's a late change in selection due to injury/illness. It would be a real shame for Jodie if she proves to be way stronger by August than any of the other 3 but the selectors must know what they're doing or have their hands tied.

It's a pity Jodie's Gold Coast performance went the way it did, seeing as she came second behind Non in Cape Town today; Vicky came sixth.

Jonny was runner-up behind Alarza (Alistair was absent due to illness). Judging by her post-race interview, Jodie is now targeting a world medal this season (to go with her 2013 silver).

Daley caps off the World Series meet in Kazan with 10m platform silver.

There's also been success in taekwondo this weekend as Jade Jones won the women's -57kg category in the German Open. (A victory for Bianca Walkden as well in the women's +73kg)

Tonia Couch also took silver, a PB for her after a long sequence of bronzes.

European Badminton Champs started today at La Roche Sur Yonne in France - it's the very last ranking tournament before Olympic selection.

We already have one qualifier in every competition except women's doubles, but can theoretically have two in each, although that looks pretty unlikely.

Not keen on the new GB kit for Rio, as can be seen on the BBC news website as of today. I agree with one of the comments on the BBC article that it looks like some cheapo fashion item from a budget retailer.

Prefer the 2012 kit. Strong blue and red more like the flag colours.

Looks like they're literally trying to have the union jack fade out altogether.

I did laugh though when they have Tom Daley posing in his tiny trunks. Along with Jess Ennis-Hill in her two piece, it's like they're trying to not actually show the kit at all.

Very impressive performance this weekend in Osijek, Croatia at the World Cup Gymnastics by Ellie Downie. She won gold on all 4 apparatus & her scores add up to 59 overall. That's the type of score which would challenge for a bronze medal in Rio.

Apparently that makes her the first gymnast to sweep all ind. WAG events in a WC meet for 41 years!! Regardless of her competition, that is an achievement in itself (as is scoring 59 across 4 pieces, albeit over 2 days so it's not a proper AA rehearsal).

The sailing squad is now complete with Luke Patience / Chris Grube selected for the men’s 470 and Dylan Fletcher / Alain Sign for the 49er.

As usual, a solid return of medals is expected - 1G 4S was the score at Weymouth, and I remember a couple of medals being blown at the last minute. We are number one on the all-time Olympic list! Probably the only sport for which this is true, tug of war excepted.

Lots of big events in various sports this weekend, so let's make a start.

Cross Country Mountain Biking - European Champs in Husqvarna, Sweden. Men's and Women's finals on Sunday.

Olympic Qualification for this is based on UCI Nations Rankings. We are in a bit of a mess, with our men needing to rise from 26th to 24th to get a single place, and the women needing to rise from 20th to 17th for their one place.

Eventing - Badminton Horse Trials started yesterday, Coverage is BBC Red Button on Saturday, live on BBC2 on Sunday. Team GB is fully qualified thanks to our Silver Medal at the last World Champs, so it will all be about impressing the team selectors

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/equestrian/36206709

Modern Pentathlon - World Cup Finals from Sarasota, Florida. It's all about qualifying for the World Champs in Moscow at the end of the month and improving World Rankings.

TV Coverage is streaming with commentary - BT Sport are now showing highlights shows as a kind of schedule filler.

http://www.uipmtv.org/

Women's Final - Friday 21:30
Men's Final - Saturday 21::30

Rowing - European Champs from Brandenburg. Germany. First run out for the season for most of Team GB's aces. Not a direct Olympic qualifier. TV Coverage is on Sunday Finals day, BBC Red Button and Eurosport for the full sessions, BBC2 highlights.
