Looks like that table tennis bronze medal from a few months ago was enough to bag the men a team berth as Sam Walker has been added to the squad.

Two other things this weekend, both involving paddling and splashing. Medal chances for the Brits in all the slalom disciplines, and a couple in the sprints as well.
Canoe Slalom. First World Cup of the Season from Ivrea, Italy http://www.canoeicf.com/news/ivrea-s...-slalom-season Probably live on Eurosport International or the Eurosport Player, but with British Eurosport being all tennis all the time at the moment, only guaranteed coverage is on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...wq3qHT04SfSDIh Canoe Sprint World Cup 3 from Montemor, Portugal Like the slalom no Eurosport, it will be YouTube only. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...PXvp8lG0__KK8y |

The senior British ladies (173.363) have edged Russia (173.261) in qualification.* Oh aye!
Here's the page for all corresponding WAG results. No Brit did all 4 pieces, but that's not a concern in this particular championship format. They qualified for apparatus finals as follows: Fragapane was 1st on floor (scored at 15 ) and 5th on vaultE Downie was 2nd on vault and 4th on floor B Downie was 2nd on uneven bars and 5th on balance beam Jupp was 5th on uneven bars (and 1st reserve on balance beam) That's 7 out of a possible 8 qualifiers. Nice work. [* Likely battle for Olympic bronze behind USA and China] |

Team final on Saturday should be a cracker. GB scored higher today than they did in Glasgow when winning world bronze and there is room for improvement. Claudia fell on beam & Ellie can also come in on Beam and score higher than Gabby. Plus Amy Tinkler will almost certainly be back for Rio.
The British will also hope for 3 or 4 apparatus medals |

Russia wins the senior women's team final with 175.212, so they improved by around 2 points. A solid silver again for GB with 170.312 - gold was arguably beyond them, but to lose 3 points from qualifying was disappointing (the balance beam did it).
Angelina Melnikova scored 58.732 across all 4 pieces, though I'd say Giulia Steingruber is the best of those competing provided she doesn't fall off the beam. She's favourite on vault and floor, anyhow. |

Should be a great battle. Really hope Becky comes out & nails her beam tomorrow to put today's disappointment behind her. |

Pretty good day for the GB women in today's senior apparatus finals - or to put it another way, a great day for the Downies!
Becky regained her uneven bars title with a score of 15.500, ahead of one of four (!!) world champions and the Olympic champion. Her beam routine was shaky, but she still broke 14 (Mustafina scored 15.100!) Ellie won silver on both vault and floor, both behind Steingruber (who pulled out a 15.200 on the latter!); Fragapane was on for a floor medal until her knees bent on the final landing. Oh, and there were no falls on beam today. |

I can't remember the last time we saw a major beam final with no falls. Chuffed for Becky to win bars gold after yesterday. Overall the women got 1 more medal than the men, probably the first time that's happened for a few years since Beth Tweddle competed.

In the junior apparatus finals, it's silver for Alice Kinsella on beam and floor.
The overall medal haul for all GB seniors was 2G 5S - the best haul in even-year ECh, and just 1 medal fewer than last year's haul of 2G 4S 2B. Looking ahead to Rio - provided Whitlock is back in top form and Smith makes the squad, I think GB will win 5 medals and produce its first Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics. |

Some notable performances in last weekend ITU Duathlon WCh - strictly speaking, duathlon is not an Olympic event but I feel this thread is the best place for it.
Richard Murray, one of the big names in men's triathlon, has just bagged himself the elite men's duathlon world title. There were also a couple of British world champions in Emma Pallant (elite women) and Alex Yee (junior men), which is interesting as both had/have good junior careers in athletics (the former won WJCh 1,500m bronze back in 2008). |

I'd agree on the likely medal haul in Rio. Both teams have a chance (men's is stronger). Max has a chance of 3 individual medals and he & Louis have the best chance of gold on PH. Downies & Claudia have chances for apparatus medals and after Simone Biles & Gabby Douglas the Bronze AA around is wide open with Ellie having an outside chance. I think for the men the selectors will end up going for experience with Max, Dan, Kristian, Louis & Nile. On the women's I think 4 places are sewn up with the Downies, Frags & Amy Tinkler. 5th is still up for grabs as I don't think Ruby has yet done enough and only way they would take Gabby Jupp is if Becky got injured as she is not back working floor & Vault after her injuries. Not sure what the status is with Becky Tunney & if she'll be available for selection & competing in the next few weeks. Nobody else is sticking their hand up for me |

Wow, didn't realise 2010 was that good. Also just learned those championships were held on home soil, which means we've hosted all four international championships that Brits are eligible for in the space of just over six years (including two editions of the WCh) - astonishing when you think about it.

I was at the NIA to see Beth win her golds which prompted my previous post. And of course Glasgow is hosting the Europeans again in 2018 as part of the European Championships Umbrella.

Here's the Rio-bound modern pentathlon quartet. The ladies are looking to maintain their record of medalling in every Games since their first in 2000, whereas the men are yet to win an individual medal.

Another busy weekend coming up. First of all, domestic selection finals
Diving - National Champs from Ponds Forge. We're supposing most of the big names will get the nod, but there will be a lot of competition amongst the younger divers Weightlifting - National Champs from Coventry. One men and one women's place across all the weigh divisions to be filled. The women's selection is going to be hard-fought and controversial no matter what. |

And some of the Olympic sports move away from the usual third world hellhole World Cup venues like Queensland and the South of France back to the glimmering beaches and sun-kissed grasslands of Blighty.
Sailing - Strong British medal chances in the Sailing World Cup at Weymouth over the weekend - live coverage on BT Sport Europe on Sunday 11:00 Triathlon - Strongest possible (at time of going to print) British team in action in Leeds, live on BBC2 on Sunday afternoon. Hockey - Crucial Olympic Warm-Up tournament from the Olympic Park, London - the Men's Champions Trophy. Runs all next week, think all the games are live on BT Sport, certainly all the GB ones are. And not in Britain Swimming - Last chance qualification saloon for the 10K open water swim in Setubal, Portugal. Top 9 finish needed for the Olympic hopefuls. Slalom canoeing - Team GB picked up a couple of non-Olympic medals last weekend, this week it is the 1992 Olympic venue in La Seu d'Urgell, Catalonia. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...zzyT9h8eoOq-uu |

Keri Anne has just swam a very savvy race to qualify for Rio. Lingered back in 8th-12th place for most of the swim (two hours long) then made move in the late stages. She paced the a breakaway of three swimmers into the finish. Just nipped at the finish by the Chinese girl and finished 2nd. She had me really worried for most of that race! A few big names are not going to Rio in this race!

Good for her! Mind you, qualifying for the open-water swim in Rio sounds like the very definition of a mixed blessing.

In the Men's Champion trophy (Hockey) are the Germans and Aussies for example playing weaken side as there have been a few unexpected results?
I am no expert so I might be talking rubbish but I have been surprised. |
