Not sure who Javier Garcia is but Javier Gomez is out of Rio. He had a crash on his bike yesterday & fractured his arm. Real shame for the event & for him this was realistically his last chance at Olympic Gold.
I expect Mario Mola to win the men's race, as well as being in good form overall this year the sprint distance suits him. Hopefully a good last race ahead of Rio for Helen Jenkins. Shame that there won't be a strong British team for the mixed relay though of course Rio takes priority. Always exciting to watch. Hopefully will be added to the Olympics in Tokyo, could easily make it so that relay athletes have to come from those already selected for individual events if keeping numbers down is an issue. Nervous times for anyone selected for Rio with no realistic recovery time left if they get injured now. Must be heartbreaking after all the effort they put in to get and stay in top form and be one of the best in the world at their discipline. |

Her horse High Kingdom (with whom she competed at London 2012) was injured last year. He recovered in time for them to compete at Badminton earlier this year. They went quite well Cross Country but he wasn't quite on point in the Dressage or Show Jumping hence they weren't selected. She doesn't currently have another horse at world class level. |

Didn't see the Triathlon individual races live but caught highlights. Good victory by Mola & fair to say Richard Murray made a part of himself with his histrionics after getting a time penalty for putting his swim gear in the wrong box in transition. As it was a sprint distance not enough time for Jorgensen to claw back distance on the run after being behind on swim/bike. Victory went to her team mate Katie Zaferes. Another disappointing swim by Helen Jenkins.

Really has to be a blanket ban for Russia at the Olympics given the extent of doping - 580 cases, 30 sports - and direct government involvement.

I hope no one is surprised by the doping report, Russia has real form on organised doping going back 50 yrs.
Frankly will watch little of these Olympics, as I simply cant trust any of the contestants not to dope. |

Russia seems to be immune from prosecution! Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, annexed Crimea: Quote:
The Russian Federation then officially annexed Crimea and now administers it as two federal subjects: the Republic of Crimea and the federal city of Sevastopol. Ukraine, backed by most of the international community, refuses to accept the annexation and continues to assert its right over the peninsula. ...but Russia still has the World Cup in 2018! Go figure.
The majority of members of the international community and organizations such as Amnesty International have condemned Russia for its actions in post-revolutionary Ukraine, accusing it of breaking international law and violating Ukrainian sovereignty. Many countries implemented economic sanctions against Russia, Russian individuals or companies – to which Russia responded in kind. |

Rugby Sevens Squads for Rio named.
https://www.teamgb.com/news/team-gb-...-sevens-squads The women's team is all-English, the men are more like a Lions squad, excluding the Irish though. |

There are 366 competitors in all - making it the third biggest GB Olympic team at an 'away' Games.
There were 389 at Barcelona 1992 and 382 at Seoul 1988. |

Hopefully they'll stay on terms with the other medal favourites during the swim in Rio, then it will come down to whether anyone manages to breakaway from Gwen on the bike (apparently the course is hilly so could throw up some interesting tactics or highlight an individual's weakness not usually seen). Not sure if Helen or Non could challenge Gwen in the run if starting at similar times, but is should be a good battle if all arrive on the start line injury free and in top form. Though them watching each other may give someone else in good form a chance to break free and secure victory. It's on my shortlist of unmissable events in Rio. Looking forward to the mens race too but it's the Brownlees to lose now Gomez is out. Only Mola looks to be anywhere near capable of challenging for gold. |

To be fair Helen lost her goggles during the swim but as with Non in recent events the swim has been their weakness.

I've just noticed that total includes a couple of late additions to the canoe sprint squad. The ICF banned Romania and Belarus for a year due to systemic doping, which means Lani Belcher and Angela Hannah have qualified for the women's K-2 500m. |

Anyway, here's the full team as it stands now all in one place. https://www.teamgb.com/news/team-gb-...-2016-complete |

In other words they forfeit the right to host 2018 World Cup |

I was just checking out the list of athletes we are sending to Rio and have a question about the men's gymnastics.
Why is Louis Smith so revered when it appears to me, as a casual viewer, that he is only good at one thing. That being the pommel horse. The other guys on the team, Nile Wilson, Max Whitlock, Brinn Bevan and Kristian Thomas are all good at more than one thing. So why does Louis did get that fifth spot instead of a fifth all-rounder like Daniel Purvis? |

Really Brinn took Dan's spot rather than Louis and then of course Courtney Tulloch could consider himself unlucky as he's our best rings worker and would likely make the final of that event. |

I don't think Louis selection was guaranteed, far from it. In a 5 man team where you have 3 gymnasts on each piece in the Team Final, it can be justified to take an apparatus specialist.
Dan was unfortunate & he's been a great team man over the years but he lost form at the wrong time. He's even been a bit shaky recently on his strongest pieces like Floor & P Bars. |

I know that a lot of people will have found some new sporting interests during the Olympics, so here's some What Happens Next information for each sport.
Archery The Archery World Cup season has one more event, the final in Odense, Denmark on 24-25. TV coverage will likely be highlights on Eurosport, but Archery has a good YouTube channel which covers the medal rounds of most events. https://www.youtube.com/user/archerytv/videos Artistic Gymnastcs That seems to be it for the year as far as international competition is concerned. There are a few regional championships, but nothing that's going to involve Team GB Athletics Still quite a few meets to come, of which the most important will be the four Diamond League meets, staring in Lausanne on 25th August. Live on Eurosport, highlights on BBC the next day. Keep up with all the news and gossip inthe DS Sport Athletics Thread. http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2126029 Badminton Like the Tennis tours, Badminton runs many competitions during the year at various levels of the sport. The main elite competition is the BWF Super Series https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_BWF_Super_Series Coverage is streamed free via Livestream https://livestream.com/bwfbadminton More to come.... |

Basketball
Well, obviously there is tons of this on TV - BT Sport/ESPN cover the NBA and college basketball. For British domestic basketball, Team GB are playing a series of qualifiers for Eurobasket, the European Championships in early September. http://bbl.org.uk/key-dates/ The full British season begins on September 23rd and runs through to May. The BBC will be covering a lot of the games via the Red Button and Streaming http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/basketball/36722756 Beach Volleyball Final event of the season is the Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals to be held in the sun-kissed vacation paradise that is....Toronto, Canada on 13-18 September. As a sport it does not get as much TV coverage as you'd expect. Coverage is on the YouTube FIVB Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNM...ZI2QzL4pWOvP_w Boxing It seems that the season is pretty much over now - can't find any major events coming up before next year. European and World Championships usually get decent coverage on the BBC. |
