Double Olympic Gold Medallist Heather Stanning has announced her retirement from competitive rowing.

She has an active career as an Army officer to go back to. Her boat-mate Helen Glover will continue with the squad.

The UK will host yet another* Olympic-class World Championships before the decade is out! The curiously-named World Taekwondo Federation () have awarded their primary champs to Manchester for 2019.

On the rowing front, Sam Townsend and George Nash have also called time on their careers as elite sportsmen.

[* For reference, here's a full list of past events UK Sport has backed since 2007.]

5 boxers from the home nations have won medals in this week's Women's European Amateur Boxing Championships.

Pick of the bunch was middleweight Natasha Gale, who became only the second boxer from GB (or Leeds, for that matter!) to win a gold medal in this particular championship.

BBC starting coverage of the British Basketball League this weekend. Not a huge fan personally, but this is exactly the kind of sport that the BBC should be covering IMHO. The only way we are going to ever get to an Olympic Basketball tournament is having a strong club scene, not through lottery money or NBA mercenaries.

Another end of season award, Adam Peaty win's FINA's Olympic Performance of the Year for his 100m Breaststroke win and WR in Rio. Non-Olympian Gary Hunt wins for Best High Diver of the year. Unsurprisingly, Katinka Hosszu and Michael Phelps won the Best overall swimmer awards.

I suppose the reason we've never heard of these awards before is that no Brits have ever won them before.

Good luck to Robbie, he was always a fine ambassador for the sport.

A couple of things this weekend in our gold-medal winning Rio sports.

Finale to the Taekwondo season this weekend, with the Taekwondo Grand Prix Final in Baku, Azerbaijan tomorrow and Saturday. Baku must be just about the world capital of these second tier international sports events, always plenty of oil money to spread around..

Pretty much the full strength British squad in action, including Rio medallists Jade Jones & Bianca Walkden, but not Lutalo Muhammad who has spent the last three months staring blankly into the middle distance, wondering how he managed to concede a head kick with one second left on the clock.

There's live streaming here

Sailing World Cup final from Melbourne, Australia. Has been in action all week, but the medal races are on YouTube this weekend. There's some Brits in action, but it doesn't look as though many of our big names have made the trip.

Live coverage on the Olympic Channel.

UK Sport funding for Tokyo announced. £345 million to be spent.

Losing funding: Archery, badminton, fencing, weightlifting, wheelchair rugby
Big gainer: Shooting

All the usual suspects get big allocations. Full figures here.

Taekwondo was among the sports to earn an increase in funding...and just hours later, Charlie Maddock bests the Olympic -49kg champ (Kim So-hui) to win her division in the Grand Prix Final! Baku was, of course, where she won the European Games title last year.

Also worth mentioning is that Lauren Williams won the -68kg division in the Junior World Championships last month, adding to the -59kg title she won back in 2014 (and the senior European -67kg title in May).

And in that same vein, the two spearheads of GB Taekwondo come up trumps as Jones finishes the season unbeaten (AFAIK) and Walkden gets revenge on Zheng for her semi-final defeat in Rio.

The only thing Jones needs for the full career set is a world title.

This year's World Swimming Championships (25m) are done and dusted.

The United States topped the table ahead of Hungary* and Russia. 5 medals were claimed by the British team, including a maiden global crown (only just!) for Molly Renshaw.

[* AKA Katinka Hosszú, who won NINE of their 11 medals (including 7 gold)]

Although they didn't retain their Super Series Final title, Chris and Gabrielle Adcock did their bit for Badminton England by contesting the final. If anyone's interested, here's a petition to get elite funding from UK Sport restored.

BTW, it has been a week and BBC Sport have still failed to publish an article on Renshaw's victory in the Short Course Worlds.

I was watching South Today this evening and they reported from an indoor climbing centre to say how popular climbing was becoming with kids

They then interviewed 'a professional climber'. Yep, a professional climber!!
Does anyone these days not want to do an honest days' work? Climbing for a living is a cop out and a ludicrous occupation.

And for climbing to now be in the Olympics??? Give me strength....

Sadly, familiar problems with lottery funding in Diving - the influx of big money going to the suits and blazers in HQ, nothing getting through to coaches etc at grass roots who are doing the actual work.

Olympic champion Jack Laugher has blamed British Diving after his coach quit his role to join Australia's team.

Very disappointing decision by British Swimming. They are happy to pay a Russian Performance Director & an American coach in London (coaching Tom Daley amongst others) but won't fund a British coach who was responsible for the first ever GB Olympic gold in the sport - and as a result he's off to Australia who do recognise his worth.

August will be a huge month for Olympic-class events in the UK as London and Glasgow host the IAAF World Championships (4-13 August) and BWF World Championships* (21-27 August) respectively.

Pete Reed is aiming to become the third British rower to win 4 Olympic titles. Come Tokyo 2020, he will be 39 (Steve Redgrave was 38 in Sydney 2000).

[* Would be ironic should UK Sport's decision on badminton funding stand]
