no, you plug it in to a spare HDMI port on your TV

How do I get DD surround?

you don't, unless you can plug your TV directly in to your amp and your TV has DD surround.

That's what I do. My LG passes DD 5.1 through optical. Yet to find any DD 5.1 to test Chromecast though.

Not sure why people are saying no to your initial question. Perfectly fine to plug into one of the HDMI IN ports on an amp. Only reason not to do so really is if you don't have a spare USB port on the AMP (if it has one at all) and the usb wire wont reach the USB ports on the TV (or another settop box with USB) and you dont want to use the plug adaptor

Got mine plugged into a spare HDMI port on my amp, and it works fine. The TV will even switch channels automatically as soon as I cast something, even with the amp turned off. Of course that does leave a minor problem in that I then have to turn the amp on to switch inputs when I have finished casting.

Wakey and soran, thats good to know,I though that was a bit odd that I wouldn't be able to do this.
I've borrowed a dongle to see if it's ok for me, try it later.

I plug mine into a port on my AV amp too, and power it from a USB port on the TV. This is much better for me, as I only rarely switch the TV input away from the AV amp output, so the input selection process is consistent (and can be named, and displays on the AV amp). It also means the Chromecast is only powered when the TV is on, so if I am using the amp for audio only, it saves a small amount of power (I must get around to measuring it!).

If I use the Chromecast for casting audio only (which I don't do much), I can just plug the USB lead into the adaptor (my AV amp only has a front USB port behind a panel, so that would look messy, and in any case it's currently occupied by one of those tiny cruzer-fit (?) flash memory sticks, with music on it).

Same here, run my off of a spare HDMI on my amp. Take the power from the USB port on my amp also.

As soon as I start to cast something TV and Amp switch on automatically.

My dongle is plugged directly in to my TV but it doesn't switch the channel automatically. But then that's probably more down to having a rubbish tv
