A fabulous character actor. Its rarely repeated but Our Friend in the North is one of the greatest dramas of last 20 years. His performance as the father of Chris Eccelston , in particular the scenes where he was suffering from demetia was very powerful and would bring tears to a glass eye
A great performance in a very great series.

My Uncle was in the Army with him during World War Two... rather divergent paths "I went to fight in Tunisia... he went to Stars in Battledress!"

This is a good website for finding out who's dead or alive in the celeb world:

http://www.deadoraliveinfo.com/dead.nsf/pages-nf/main
I used to refer to that a lot, but it still lists Dolores Hope and Ruby Muhammad as alive even thought they both died years ago. What makes it worse is that the website boasts that it is always very up-to-date and has only ever made one mistake. I have written in a message in the "contact" thingy (the bit where it tells you to write a word beginning with D) several times, but it has never been corrected.

I think Grouty was only in 3 episodes of Porridge; 2 regular and 1 Christmas Special although he may have been mentioned in a few more
He was also in the film of Porridge.

He was outstanding in Our Friends in the North with one Daniel Craig, an always reliable actor who never fails to please.
Agreed, he was simply brilliant as Felix, especially when he had alzheimers, he should have won an award! He outshone Chris Ecclestone, Daniel Craig, Mark Strong and Gina McGee, who have all gone on to big things, maybe they learnt a bit from the Genial one

Isn't he Gregor (Rab C Nesbitt) Fisher's father in law?

How he didn't win the BAFTA for his portrayal of Felix Hutchinson is beyond me.

If you ask most people to name characters from Porridge they will say, "Fletcher, Godber, McKay and Grouty."

Thought I'd bump the old Peter Vaughan thread as he's died aged 93.

He lived to a remarkable age. I am pleased to see this news added to a thread about him. I prefer this to multiple threads.

About time someone noticed the thread.
Bumped this because it had lots of good things to say about him.

Just recently watched Our Friends in the North, just before Peter died. He was an outstanding actor and his scenes particularly in the 1995 year of OFITN were amongst the best acting I have seen, where he plays an elderly gent suffering from dementia, it would bring a tear to a glass eye

RIP Peter

Over the weekend, I watched one of the BBC's A Ghost Story for Christmas films that Peter starred in, 'A Warning to the Curious'.
Absolutely brilliant and chilling short film and Peter's performance is superb.
