didnt realise fibre was active

On a whim I entered my phone number on bt website and says I can now have bt fibre.

However im on bt unlimited and sync about 20mb down 1.3 up for my 16 quid.

Fibre is also 16 quid but capped at 40gb. Rekon this might be borderline for us as all 4 of us use Internet constantly via tabs, ps4 and phones. We don't do torrents or anything like that but ps4/ps3 titles can be big and daughter watches netflix on tablet.

I think its 23 quid for unlimited. Not sure if I'd really appreciate the extra speed as to be honest it c already feels quick. ...but maybe only cause I'm used to it. I used to think my 3.4k was quick at the time on dial up.

Anyone been in a similar situation of already having decent adsl and changing over to fibre ? Worth it ?

I should add that I haven't noticed any new local cabinets appear so possibly it wouldn't be much closer to me than just now. I can see the exchange out my back window. Its about 250 metres as crow flys from me, although I realise the cables don't necessarily go that way. When I was with be internet I maxed out at 24mb down 1.3 up.

So am now wondering how much closer I could get since I'm already so close. Would my speed actually shift ? Surely they'd need to stick a cabinet outside my door for me to get any better

Does your ISP provide usage history for your account? PlusNet (my ISP) does.

Did the BT checker give you a range for the expected fibre speed. I believe there may two ranges given - one for up to 40 and one for up to 80mb (if your line supports a high speed).

PlusNet are currently £19.99 for unlimited fibre (plus £14-50 line rental). Other ISP's may be cheaper.

Says estimates 35-51mb and 8-10 I think up. Does say estimates 10-19.5 for adsl too and I max that out.

I'll need to check my useage

Certainly looks as though you would have to choose un-limited if you make the jump.

While BT look expensive it appears they are a "value added" service if that makes any sense (eg you get BT Sport for free I believe) so it all depends on what you want from your ISP provider.

There is one thing to note however. BT supply an integrated modem / router (the HH5) which has dual band wireless.

Other ISP's may or may not offer an integrated box. PlusNet use their standard router along with an OpenReach supplied modem (two boxes / power supplies). It is also only single band wireless.

Ok thanks. I have the hh5 just now. ..or maybe it's 4, if 4 still looks the same as 5. It certainly has the dual band.

Not sure will need to think it over. As I say it feels fast enough just now. Maybe just wanting something for the sake of it.

HH5 has a blue strip on the front above the light, the HH4 has a black one.

Generally you download speed is pretty quick already, certainly should be fine for most streaming services. The only difference your likely to notice I suspect would be on large downloads, or if you every get any buffering type issues when all for are using it at the same time.

Upload speed however you may well notice a bit difference, if you use any cloud storage or want to access your home network remotely (streaming from a NAS box to a tablet whilst away from home say)

About same distance as me then. On adsl2+ annex M. I got a full 24Mb down 2.6 up.
Now get 80Mbps down 20Mbps up.

VDSL2 uses different frequencies and many more tones are available hence the possibility of higher speeds.

From what you've described you use the internet for, I reckon you use more than 40gb. Also from what described you use the internet for, ADSL will probably do you (unless really want you console games download quicker, or you upload a lot).

I would say its worth the switch

Would be nice if it was active where I live, every cabinet in the area has been done apart from mine, apparently a large housing estate and industrial estate are not cost viable!.

BT are infuriating. This should not be allowed to happen. I work in the biggest industrial estate in Scotland and most of it has long slow adsl only lines. The lines are also poor quality. Its hard to keep a connection for longer than an hour or so. BT have activated a few fibre cabs but most of the estate is languishing. CRAZY.

But assuming that most companies have / need internet access , they will have products which are not DSL. .. So the density for DSL will kit be that great...
And or the owners and occupiers of the site have not got together to get either BT or another provider in to give them genuine FTTP ... Is there virgin there ? Or as you are in Scotland thus/Vodafone ..
If there is business business telco are usually falling over themselves to get in ...
While with domestic business it is a lot less likely ,
