Customers of the BT TV service have been told that the operator intends to ”close” their old BTVision broadband IPTV service. Owners of the related set top box devices will instead be offered an upgrade to the new YouView based STB kit “at no extra cost“, but you’ll have to re-contract both your TV and broadband for another 18 months first.

I wonder if this means that Sky Sports is coming to BT YouView. If it is, this may mean a switch back to BT YouView for me. I ditched it a while ago (i had a retail box) but this was before the live channels started broadcasting.

About time. Offering and supporting two very different stbs is confusing and expensive. I have the new BT Youview STB and it's excellent. There are many hints from those in the know that Sky sports is indeed coming to youview at last too which is good news.

Apparently this is only for silver BT Vision boxes at present.

I tried to upgrade from BT Vision to YouView and was told it would cost around £200.

I was advised to hold fire for a few months to see what their timelines are for replacing the black boxes.

BT has made no secret of the fact that its TV strategy going forward is based entirely on YouView as an IPTV platform.

Sky Sport will be on on BT YouView sooner or later — the regulator will insist on it.

BT does need to help it's self and customers with only having one type of TV platform box as this we be helped by only one type software to keep updated and one network to work with... yes sky sports is a hold up for some customers but with freeview and BT there is a lot of sport channels and shows and when sky get down from it's high horse BT will be given the sport channels and also with talk talk having them and the IPTV network needing to work out channel numbers on the freeview platform epg for internet services.

If BT and TT both move away from the Freeview broadcast version of Sky Sports to the IPTV version will there be any market left for the broadcast version? What will Sky do with the space then?

Gomez, Sky sports is not displayed over DTT/Freeview by BT or TT.

The space is owned by BT and not Sky. It is used by BT to transmit BT Sport 1 & 2 to the black vision boxes in non-fibre areas. BT has not announced a date when it will stop transmitting its channels over DTT. Sky Sports on YouView is transmitted by IPTV not DTT.

My mother has got the replacement box having had the old silver box. The man on the phone told her that as soon as he turns her new box on, then she will lose her recordings on the vision machine. is this true?

Yes from what I have heard this is true. For I belive to cant use a Vision + box and a Youview box from BT on the same broadband. However you can use to Youview boxes on the same broadband in the house if your speed is fast enough.

Basically true. The Silver boxes need to communicate with the BT servers for you to be able to record, watch recordings, even start it up. When you get the new YouView box, I suspect they will de-activate the Silver box, effectively stopping it from working. But, this will happen very soon anyway when BT disconnect all of the Silver boxes.

I was coming here to ask something very similar!

Will my old silver box not continue to work just as an external hard drive for the programmes I've got saved? What a shame, I've got some gems that I don't really want to lose

No. Before the box works it "talks" to BT to make sure it is authorised. I have bought several boxes from car boot sales for around a £1 they become useless without a BT subscription. Even the hard drive will not re-format for use on something else.
So no viewing freeview channels.
No viewing previous recorded material.
The box becomes useless.
If you want to save your recordings you need to transfer them to a DVD or video recorder or you will loose them when the box is disabled.

So after 30/6/14 will the BT sports channels still be available on LCN 58 & 59?

Thank you very much for your reply I'm going to rewatch them all and start to make a new collection on my new box when we set it up
