do 1 Direction like their own music?
I always get the impression they're quite ambivalent towards their music, but they praise it in interviews to keep their management sweet. very stage managed

Looking at their musical tastes listed on their WIkipedia page, I would say 'no'.

No, you can clearly tell by looking at them on stage that they're saying to themselves "can't believe I'm singing this shit, god help me"

The likelihood is no. How many straight men in their early 20s do?

Well they must like the music on their latest album , they wrote 14 of the 18 songs.
![]() The last album is very eclectic compared to their first two which was pure pop |

True, but you can write music and it not be music you like.
Same way you can be good at your job and not like it. I used to be good at maths in school but I thought it was really boring - a lot of it at least! You can do lots of things for money. |

You find with a lot of pop acts that were once in a girl group/boy band/pop group who then embark on a solo career their solo music sounds nothing like the music they used to make when they were part of the group even those who were the main songwriter of the group in question. Their solo music usually gives some indication that the music they used to make when part of the group wasn't to their personal taste but they had to perform it to pay the bills and keep the fans happy.
I can well imagine that 1D have different musical tastes individually but as a collective they perform the songs that suit the fans musical tastes. |

A lot of individuals realise that the only way of getting success is to compromise their integrity. There are a few acts who have never done that - Kate Bush, PJ Harvey and Radiohead spring to mind but 1D are certainly not in that category!
I'd be extremely surprised for example if the laddish Wanted were happy singing some of their poppy boyband songs. |

I agree that the music is usually different between boybands and later solo artists and I think it should be that way actually - it is not just with boybands either, Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 music is quite different for example.
Regarding Westlife boys, well only Shane released a solo original album and he admitted he loves country music, especially Garth Brooks so he went with something he truly loves. Mark on the other hand is doing something that no one will apparently expect from him, my guess it is RnB. When you are a solo artist, it is a different ball game, your personal taste is more visible, especially if you write your own songs. But like someone mentioned, 1D boys co-wrote a lot of songs from the last album so I presume they like it. But of course that the music is still neatly constructed to appeal to their fanbase, with influences from popular cool bands of today like One Republic, Mumford and Sons, Lumineers, Snow Patrol. That is just a boyband thing. |

I think Zane is probably more into Urban pop/RnB so if the goes solo I can see him releasing that kinda material.

When you look at the shift in genre on the third album to more rock, and a recent quote from Harry that guys who have written off 1D should "give the fourth album a go", I think it's clear that they're now doing the music they really wanted to.
First album they wouldn't have had a say. Second maybe a little - this is the one that catapulted them to global domination. Third album is where I think they were given the reigns to start doing more what they want. |

I think they are liking their 3rd more than the others because they have been more involved with the actual song writing.
Didn't Liam get one of their own lyrics tattooed on his arm? He can't think it's that bad then! |

I don't think they adore every song on their first two albums, I'm sure there are a few duds they'll be happy to remove from the tour setlist. They seem happy singing the others though.
Niall is a big boyband fan so I think he's hugely into that genre and he also loves stadium rock like The Eagles which they have tried to go for on their 3rd album. I think Harry and Louis like the new rocky sound and Liam must do too as he wrote on lots of them. Don't know how much Zayn likes this album - he didn't write much on it. I think he said he was into R&B and hip-hop growing up so I'm not sure how What Makes You Beautiful and Midnight Memories fit into that. But I think he enjoys getting a juicy solo and some ad-libs to show off his voice and there's plenty of that. God knows what One Direction's 4th album is going to sound like - Liam and Louis have been in the studio with Good Charlotte, 1975 and Fall Out Boy. Liam seems to like Drum & Bass and talked about making an album guys will like. Zayn's been working with Emeli Sande and Naughty Boy and there's been talk of him rapping. Harry's written with Kodaline and Niall with McFly. They've got more time to work on it than the last one so hopefully it will be decent and they won't fall out over what to put in it. When Zayn and Harry go solo I think their albums will sound nothing alike. Zayn can sing anything but Harry can't go near R&B or easy listening ballads, and I'm not sure how his tone would fit with EDM either. |

They probably don't like them all, they stick to their style because they know their fans enjoy it.

I think it's quite common perhaps they don't as individually they've all had to compromise to make the group due to the fact they are manufactured and not formed naturally with the same common music vision.
It's like Charlie Simpson from Busted who clearly compromised during being in that band in every aspect before in time leaving and going back to forming a band that was making the type of rock music he used to be a part of before joining Busted and doing what he wanted to do. Some of them perhaps are having to let their own tastes and styles of music go by the wayside (Zayn perhaps) while others may like the sound/music of what they're doing more (Niall if he's a boyband fan) Zayn might be like Robbie in his last year of Take That simply doing as he's told and not contributing (someone mentioned he offered little to new record) accepting the group for what they are and keeping the band wagon going. It's also a case of what they vocally are best at as none of them present themselves as genuine rock vocalists however they can sing pop songs so play to their strengths. They say they aren't going to split up like for example the Backstreet Boys who have kept going but i'm not convinced I think they'll reach an age and then someone will split while they're young (no pun intended) say mid 20's which is still a few years off for all of them. |

The Backstreet Boys had a long break though, I think started by Nick Carter wanting to go solo and maybe another one having some substance abuse issues. They had a great run but like Take That it was only a few years with 12 years or so before a very successful reunion.
Girls Aloud lasted a decade but McFly are the only boyband I can think of that have stayed together longer than 3-5 years of success (I'm not counting The Beatles because they weren't really a boyband). Have I missed any? What's helped McFly is being nice guys who are very good friends, always writing their own stuff and having different roles from being a band rather than a vocal group. Plus they've taken time out to do other things like Strictly and I'm a Celeb, and writing for other groups. I could see One Direction being like Girls Aloud and having a year's break to do individual projects. But NSYNC said the same thing and Timberlake never went back. Harry is the Robbie but Zayn's the Justin - and Naughty Boy could be his Timbalaand. |

I don't know, but I certainly don't.
I am a massive fan of all things pop. If it's cheesy, mainstream and in the charts chances are i'll be loving it... but I can honestly say that 1D do absolutely nothing for me whatsoever. I will never get my head around their success.
