Everybody Loves Country Music?
...or so a mate of mine claims.
He confidently asserted that everyone loves a few country and western style records. I opened my mouth to protest before realising I like to belt out 'Rhinestone Cowboy' from time to time. I won't protest to the odd Johnny Cash or Kenny Rodgers tune either. 'This ol' cowboy' by the Marshall Tucker Band is an indispensible bloke-bonding classic tbh, and there aren't many of those songs going around. Everyone I know admits with to liking at least one country tune. So is it true? Can anyone say they don't like any of it!? |

You could probably say that about most genres.

I noticed you also put up a thread on dance music.
If I was being cynical I might suggest that you only have to be a computer operator to make dance music, whilst you have to be a real musician to make country music! ![]() Some great songwriters in Country like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings. Just because some people hate Country doesn't stop much of it being good. And a great deal of C/W is dance music as well. Just gotta know the dances! |

I don't really know a lot of country music but I have heard the odd song here and there and what I've heard I've liked. I don't mind it too much.

I respect your opinion, of course. But I think at it's best, dance music can invoke incredible euphoria and is unique in this regard. Or maybe it's the chemicals.
I was just hinting at the idea that Country and Bluegrass music have their origins in British and Irish folk music which contains Irish Reels and dance music. So you have barn dances and line dancing, add a bit of moonshine and these genres aren't as far apart as people might first think?!

There's only one country song I can bear to listen to and that's The Bluest Eyes In Texas - the version by A Camp. I can't even stand Neil Young's country type songs.

Country music has it's place. There's good and bad, as there is with all sorts of music.
So many young people tend to "pigeon-hole" themselves and won't "open their ears" to other genres, and dismiss them entirely, but that has always been the case. For me, it's the lyrics that make me smile, so many are about "my man done me wrong." Here's an example, from a decade ago, but it's a belting song, sung really well and I often play it. It don't all have to be Patsy Cline. What's not to not like about this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNOU...id=P90wKHNKdKA |

I do like some current country singers. Not the cliched ones but artists like Kacey Musgraves (released the album of 2013 for me), The Civil Wars (if they count) and Ashley Monroe.
I think there's a huge stereotype surrounding country music which puts people off and leads them to say they hate it all. There are actually a lot of different country sounds and it can lead to some great pop country songs that are a real success in the US like Need You Now (Lady Antebellum) and Before He Cheats (Carrie Underwood) as well as traditional country songs which when done well sound amazing. So for me it's just like any other genre, some of the best and worst songs are classed as country which is why I don't like it being dismissed as a genre where everything sounds the same. I do understand that country isn't for everyone though which is fair enough.

You can't, and frankly shouldn't, say that about any genre of music. Music itself is so vast and differential that to blanket-statement about hating an entire genre is pretty ignorant. There are huge, huge differences between artists like Johnny Cash and Taylor Swift, or Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson...

I like a little bit and have done for years
Taylor swift and Carrie underwood's early stuff i like I love a bit of Shania and LeAnn Rimes as well. In the states though, it is such a dominating genre but it all sounds generic, until once in a very rare while you will come across someone who just hits the mark. |

Yes there are huge differences, I didn't say there wasn't. I still don't like any of it though.

Since Ii am sitting listening to Wrecking Ball - by Emmylou Harris then I guess it's fair to say that I am a country fan. It's a wide genre and well worth exploring ..start with Emmylou !

Just because you like one song/artist does not mean you're a fan of the whole genre, I love the song Country Roads but don't like country music, I love the Arctic Monkeys but don't like Rock/Indie music!

I am rather partial to Southern Rock (Skynyrd, Blackberry Smoke etc) if that counts. It is, after all, a mix of country music and rock music (with perhaps blues thrown in).
