Here is a video of this year's litter of fox cubs.

http://youtu.be/fDRsAuvw5fw

I missed the whole litter coming out as the camera was not set up, but here are 2 of them popping their heads out of the hole, I think there are 4 or 5 of them in total.

The mother is quite young, she is sleeping by the hole as I type.

Here is today's video.

The camera work is shaky especially in the middle as the set up isn't very good for moving the camera.

But keep watching till the end as there is some still footage of the mother and cubs.

This is a slightly better version of the last video. I've up'd the bitrate and cut out some camera shake.

My apologies if this has already been asked, but how old are they? They certainly look as though they've done a fair bit of growing alreadys.

I'm not sure, I first saw them this Saturday, so they've probably been in the den for a couple of weeks.

There was a programme about foxes last year that explained how long they stayed in the den for before being old enough to go out, but I forgot how long it was.

I think they will stay in the garden for another month before they leave as independent adults.

Here is a good timeline for foxes.

Quote:
“
The approximate time period for fox cub development is:

Born in March - at birth cubs are blind and deaf with short black fur and they rely on the vixen to keep them warm.

At 2 weeks – their eyes and ears open and they are very unsteady on their feet

At 3 weeks – they become more active and move around a lot in their den

At 4 weeks [April] – the cubs appear above ground. They weigh 600 - 700 grams, are still dependent on the vixen's milk but they begin to take regurgitated food from the vixen

At 5 - 6 weeks [late April/May] – the colour of their fur changes from chocolate brown to red; the ears and snout become longer. They start to search for earthworms, beetles and other insects to eat. The vixen produces less milk for the cubs.

At 6 - 7 weeks – the cubs are fully weaned

In June – the breeding earth is abandoned

In July – the cubs lie up above ground and adults bring them less food

In August – the cubs are able to search for food themselves and adults may lie up away from the cubs

In October – the fox family group begins to break up and the young foxes leave to find their own territory.”

This year they had 6 cubs, last year only 3, but the year before they had 9 cubs.

This was the year the fox had 8 or 9 cubs.

Lovely videos , I have to admit that before getting a camera, I never appreciated the beauty of wildlife much, other than when I had been to Oz. But since starting to take an interest in cameras, there are some truly amazing footage to be recorded & you have shown just that.

I'm glad you liked the videos. They were taken with the Cannon 600d and the lens I mentioned in the Currys thread.

I have converted the .mov files to .mp4 files for smaller files size as my up load speed is very slow. 100meg takes half an hour to up load.

Here is some more action from yesterday.

Looks like there is another litter of cubs this year.

Had 4 cubs in the garden this afternoon. They look too young to be the litter from April so might be another litter from nearby.
