Extra long title sequences.
The Sopranos, Dexter and True Detectives were bad for this. Maybe Homeland as well along with many others. It maybe ok once but when you get into the series it's just a bore and I FF through them. Dexter was extra bad with the recaps. It could be over three minutes into the show before the new episode actually started. The Blacklist and Bates Motel don't really have a title sequence, more just a title screen that flashes up for a second - Perfect! ![]() Title sequences are what make a good show great. A good tune, snazzy shots. Brilliant. The first three you mention all have both. Homeland has neither. Dexter's in particular was really good the way it makes everyday chores look like murder or weapons or such. Very good. The Sopranos music is just brilliant. The Wire. True Detective. Justified. Deadwood. Mad Men. All excellent and helps make the programmes what they are. Much better than Lost's 5 second "Lost" title or the like. |

Yeah, true. In all honestly I will watch the title sequence for the first and last episode of each series of a show if they're extra long (The Wire and The Sopranos long).

I haven't scrolled through the whole board, so may repeat, but - I agree about quiz contestants going through the answer choices out loud (eggheads), and those who say
"I have a couple in mind" - then for god's sake just say one of them! (pointless), but the thing that gets my goat happens on Countryfile, which I've practically given up watching, where they start a topic, just get you interested, then go off to something else saying they'll be back. We know it was all filmed at once, we know the films been edited, we want to know the rest now. It's not a serial. Rant over |

Yep, it's obvious that it's done to keep the viewer watching. I started to watch a consumer rights series that did it and gave up on it for that very reason.
One, maybe two of the bigger races in a series of Top Gear might be split into two bits, and everything else in the same episode will be a one-shot, and to me that's fine. Contrast Playr- a games show which bounced around the channels- which near the end of its life would only feature three games in a week. All three would make an appearance in the first half, and two of them would reappear in the second, every week. |

The beeb cutting off the snooker at an important point in a match to show a repeat.
I know not everyone will want to watch snooker but they've paid for the live rights so seems a bit of a waste not to show it live. |

On the skate off / dance off / booting out shows of reality tv, when they spend literally all but 5-10 mins of a half hour episode showing you what you watched in the main show, whether it's earlier on in the evening or yesterday. We always tape them and wind them onto the end.

Channels not making some programmes available in HD on Sky On Demand.
ITV and Channel 4 are big culprits. Take the new big US drama Fargo. It's only available in SD. |

The 'scratchy' effect they put on new shows to make them look like old footage.
The Hairy Bikers Best Of British was guilty of this recently |

The name of the Match of the Day discussion show on Sunday lunchtime being MOTD2 Extra: I don't know about others, but this makes it seem like an additional programme to Match of the Day 2, despite being on about 10 hours earlier.

The 3 minute pre-title precis at the start of a documentary [ particularly BBC ones ] that laboriously outline what the show is about, what it will contain, what it will explain, who the presenter will meet, what the show will discuss, what the show will discover, blah blergh, blah, blergh, vomit.
This is intended for when the shows are sold to the US, who demand this style of editing to incorporate the first ad break after only 3 minutes. |

Programmes / films being pulled because of real life incidents.
If it's a major event such as a terrorist attack or massive natural disaster then it's possibly the right decision but for sad events that could happen every day it seems pointless to pull a programme over it. |

When you near the end of a drama and no sooner have the credits and music started the screen shrinks and someone says 'coming up a panorama special about gas bills' talk about a tension killer

My biggest TV peeves are:-
1. Regular programmes being rescheduled/postponed/cancelled when a major sports event is on (i.e. Olympics, Wimbledon, World Cup football, PGA golf etc) 2. The constant bombardment of furniture adverts during each break 3. If an event such as the NTV awards, Oscars etc is pre-recorded to be shown at a later date and then the results are announced in the papers/on TV/radio/Internet before show is aired on TV 4. Bank Holiday TV schedules being nothing but (ancient) repeats, especially during the Christmas/New Year period. 5. Too many programmes sponsored by the likes of online gambling companies such as Foxy Bingo, especially during daytime TV. 6. Too many adverts for loan companies/credit cards encouraging people to get into debt. 7. The constant bombardment of adverts for foreign charities especially when there are people in this country that need help. 8. Adverts for PPI and personal injury claims |

In sitcoms where the lovable loser's nemesis is a middle class old scool friend who has just got back/about to go travelling / charity working / be a doctor in some poor/war torn country.

- Constant and intrusive "background" music
- Music montages in shows like Casualty/Holby - it's a TV show, not a music video - Continuity announcers yakking all over the credits - "Previously" and "still to come" clips - "Sponsored by" bumper breaks - Credit squeezing - On screen graffiti Just off the top of my head. I pretty much hate everything about how TV programmes are presented now. |

Another real bugbear I forgot:
- Trailers and previews chock full of spoilers. Are people so impatient they can't wait to see the episode in full? |
