When you're watching a sporting event on the BBC channels - and it's always those ones - and a little box comes on the screen telling you about another sport that's being shown. (For instance, they had a bit letting you know that you could choose which match you want to see. During the Wales-Belgium game last night.)

This was many years ago but I'm still baffled at the madness of it and race to stop a recording before the 'next week' bit comes on at the end of a drama ever since.

It was in ER, Dr Mark Green had been
Spoiler

What was the point of that?!
At least Doctor Who waits until after the credits before showing the "Coming next week" when they have a two-part episode.

Pet hate is during NEWS WATCH listening to the 'Head of ' any news department waffle on for ages defending their coverage of an event that has upset lots of viewers. I have never heard any of them accept any of the criticism as valid and they might as well just send a note saying 'It is my decision so tough luck'.

Another example tonight of being told the news will follow the football going in to extra time / penalties. Just in case you need to hear tragedy and same old politics again so soon.

I cringe whenever celebrities refer to members of the public as civilians. It's such an ignorant attempt to elevate themselves above the rest of us.

I don't think I've ever specifically celebs calling ordinary people civilians I have heard "ordinary" ie. non-celeb versions of game shows etc. being referred to as civilian, but it's never occurred to me as being intended to be a denigrative term.

The over-pronouncing the 'H' in words like 'white' as Stewie does in 'Family Guy'.
That's a dialect thing. As is "Haitch" - the standard pronunciation in Irish English.

Seeing a good film on Film4 and then noticing at the end the dreaded: "Edited for Content".

Why can' t the show children's films, or those at least with a child friendly rating, and show other films later, as the director intended?

Jay Leno used to always say it on his talk show. And the other day I was watching the new series of celebrity first dates and I heard them use it in the intro and it reminded me of Leno.

Caught a bit of the show Loose Women whilst in a pub today and it's still as rubbish as I remember. They only talk about sex and celebs (in a faux worship way) it's totally toe curlingly cringeworthy, a bunch of airheads.
They don't represent me or any women I know.

Shippers, or people who are obsessed with getting a male character and female character into a couple. Cus we all know that men and women can't just be friends right or work partners? *sigh. Most will disagree with me but why did *Mulder and Scully have to become an item - here's a show about government conspiracies and the possible existence of extra terrestrial life - but no apparently that's not interesting enough. Let's throw in some cliche will-they-won't they romance.

*no X Files spoilers pls, am only on the earlier series.

Never come across that word either...

EDIT: ah, having Urban Dictionary'd it I see it derives from X Files fandom...

One thing that really irritates me is when shows or ads do these annoying taste test on different foods and make them taste an own cheaper brand and a luxury brand and ask them which they prefer.

Even by taking the obvious out the equation, law of averages would tell you that on 50% ppl will go with the luxury brand, however viewers intelligence gets insulted time and time again by them choosing the cheaper own brand

You'd be surprised. I've been shopping in Lidl quite a bit recently and a lot of their cheaper "lookalike" products are every bit as good if not better than the big brands... (Gawd, I'm sounding like an advert now )

Those who mention a year just by it's number, but feel they must say 'the year 2000'.

The over-pronouncing the 'H' in words like 'white' as Stewie does in 'Family Guy'.
Do you mean that you don't like words being pronounced properly?

What is "wite"? or even, Wot is wite? Whales or Wales (the former are marine mammals, the latter a country within the UK, they are NOT pronounced the same).

Whether the weather is good or bad the two words are not pronounced the same.

Removing letters from words does not help with understanding. Likewise, adding letters and pronouncing words like law as lawr and rhyming it with lore.

I am afraid that Estuary English/RP is doing the language a disservice.

Thankfully we don't have newsreaders from London speaking with a faux-Jamaican accent, yet.

There are too many announcers dropping the "and" in dates so that they are spoken the American way. e.g. Two Thousand Eight.

It all went wrong when Frank Spencer got away with pronouncing harrassment incorrectly.

For most speakers of English, they are pronounced exactly the same. The w/wh distinction is only preserved in Scotland and Ireland, and a few other places.

I don't think I've heard "lawr" except in phrases such as "Laura Norder"! Otherwise, law and lore are homophones in many varieties of English.

I have noticed a lot of now saying "Two times" instead of "Twice" or "Double"

Why ?? "Two times" is an American expression

We have a perfectly good words - is the word "twice" not taught in schools any more ??
No Double or Triples ??

I totally agree with you, my point is that even on the off chance or even in error perhaps someone would choose the better branded stuff, but it never happens

Countdown and they are still keeping up the pretence that they are sitting in the studio everyday making the programme.

Have a nice weekend Rachel. See you tomorrow Rachel.

There is no good reason for the Euros final being on the 2 main channels at once. Sort it out.

I like football but its totally inconsiderate and pointless for ITV and BBC to show it live.Silly.

It's called recording. It's quite commonplace these days.

Are you saying you want every programme on TV to be live?

As for the "pretence", it does fool people. I remember once having a chat with an old boy who was blissfully convinced that just because Richard Whiteley used to say "It's [day/date]" on every episode that meant it was indeed live I couldn't bring myself to shatter his illusion...

When someone on a tv programme walks in on a conversation and says "what's going on" - just a personal annoyance.

Both have made significant investment in the tournament, and both make concessions to avoid duplicating matches during the groups & knockout phase. Complaining that 2 out of a minimum 12 channels are showing the final is the definition of petty, esp when you factor in all the catch-up services, recording programmes in advance to cater for this, the widespread availability of DVDs & streaming services, or the very simple idea of wandering off to do something that doesn't involve watching tv for 2 hours.

This was a valid annoyance until 1983 when C4 started up. It isn't valid in 2016.

The "hero walk" they do on programmes such as Celebrity Masterchef where the contestants walk in slow motion from around a corner then towards the camera is getting on my nerves...
