The Sopranos, Dexter, True Detectives, The Blacklist, Bates Motel, Homeland, Lost, The Sopranos, The Wire, Justified, Deadwood, Mad Men – I'm managing to struggle on through life without having ever seen a single second of any of them. That must be at least 100 hours of adverts I'm also missing.
Incidentally, my spelling of the word 'humour', above, has come up as incorrect on here because it is using AMERICAN English grammar. One more reason why I have no time for them .........................

As for your comment about adverts, there are ways of watching these shows without being subjected to a single commercial.

Missing shows, or filler shows.
For the past two weeks weve seen a channel 5* trailer for an american show called worlds worst tenants which we thought looked good. We watched it last thursday and it was ok. I went to set this weeks episodes to record and they arent on! Its a film instead. I looked on the online tv guide and there are no further episodes to air scheduled. A quick google revealed that the series was actually shown in january so last weeks two eps were probably repeats to fill an hour void. Just as we got into the show its not on anymore! We had never heard of it before and the way it was advertised made it look like it was a new weekly series starting so im quite disappointed about that. |

My wife gets irritated when you see a shot of someone driving a car who turns to talk to the passenger, and keeps looking at them while talking for what seems like forever.
Try taking your eyes off the road for ten or fifteen seconds while someone times it, it would be impossible not to look back at what's ahead. I can understand her annoyance, I can drive and have a conversation with someone in the car, without once glancing in their direction, it's not hard. One that grinds my gears, (no pun intended), is when a car comes to a halt at the kerb, the occupants have a short conversation, then the driver just opens the door without checking the rear view mirror. I often think that perhaps the director should say, "to make it look real, check the mirror before opening the door." |

There a good one in US shows where they stop, almost skid to park, then try to get out of the car before putting the parking brake on.

As for trivial things, when a long term character is suddenly revealed to be a serious villain despite their characterisation previously. I'm looking at you, Bones and The Mentalist. |

As 99.9% of American cars are automatic hardly anyone applies the parking brake. Unless they're somewhere hilly like San Francisco, they usually just engage Park . That's what I do, in my wife's automatic Fiat, and in any automatic that I may rent on vacation. I hasten to add though, I never skid to a halt when parking, unless perhaps I'm in New England and it's been snowing. |

Whatever it is they stop, start to get out of the car before it rocks forward.

Still on driving, there's often little or no connection between the steering wheel movements and the movement of the car as in the back projection view through the rear window. (Not so much a gripe, more a distraction.) |

Fake handheld camera effects really grind my gears.
I can't watch Nigel Slater's cookery shows because of the way they try to make the zoom in and focus on the diary/recipe thing look like its done with a handheld camera when the movements are so mechanical it does the exact opposite. That and the fact that Nigel appears to want to have sex with his ingredients as well. |

Whenever somebody's using an iPhone and you can see the call screen during the call. You can therefore tell that either (a) they're not actually making a call or (b) it was digitally added in post-production - when Apple designed it, they did it so that you can't accidentally end the call prematurely, mute them or put them on speaker.

Why do most people in Eastenders use the laundrette? 95 per cent of households have a washing machine, but in Eastenders it's like being in the sixties.

Talking of skidding cars, it's annoying when they car screeches to a halt or round a corner - and it is clearly driving on gravel or grass but they put the screech sound effect on anyway.

I always try to watch Countryfile on Sunday evening, on BBC1 but get really put off by the fake colour filters on the landscape filming. The sky is dark, the trees take on an eerie look and the grass seems to have an irridiscent emerald green hue. It's just not necessary to 'enhance' everything. Yuk!!

Emmerdale - today, the middle of May, one of the scenes had been filmed in the middle of the winter when every thing else showed full summer foliage. Bloody ridiculous. Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to get all the scenes for one episode to tally.

India Fisher - just tuned in to Master chef and heard that awful patronizing and condescending voice. I noticed there are quite a few critics of her when I googled her name. Why do they keep someone on when they are obviously not suitable for the job. Perhaps they could find her a speaking part on a children's tv show. I HATE the sound of her voice: it really makes me cringe.

I find the most annoying thing is the seemingly huge number of people that appear to have never heard of a PVR and insist on watching live television. And then incessantly whine about all the adverts. Seriously - adverts? I dont think I've seen any since the 1990's.
Oh .. and Coronation St. How do people, most of which are earning close to the minimum wage, manage to afford drinking every lunchtime and evening in the pub? |

If Family Guy is the only American show you've ever seen I'm not surprised you haven't watched any others.
