giffgaff 4G what's going on ?
Big run up, promotion of 4G phones, launching early April with a range of 4G goodybags, get ready......
Then silence followed by it's now a member only trial until 31/10/2014 limited to one option of 1Gb of 4G data for £10...... ???? ![]() http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/New...ighlight/false |

Well that's a bit crap why even bother. We know 4G works no need to trial it looks like they don't want giffgaffers eating into O2s 4G.

I'm on 3 but was waiting for months to see what giffgaff's 4g deals would be like. What a disappointment.
Seems all the networks apart from 3 are trying to set 4g up at a premium product, either by price or data allowance. |

But I do agree about the whole premium 4G thing. 4G should not be a premium, it should be the same price as 3G as Tesco and Three do. Even if it means prices go up, there should not be separate tariffs for 3G and 4G. |

giffgaff 4G - what's going on?
Who knows? Frankly, it looks like giffgaff don't know either. Trialling 4G with a 1GB data allowance? What a mess. I'd suspect O2's influence, but how would that explain Lycamobile's 4G offer? |

Telefonica own Giff Gaff. Telefonica do not own Lyca Mobile.
So o2 have control over giff gaff Oh, I don't know. I agree there's something going on, that's clear as day, but whether it's simply down to O2 throwing it's weight around - I don't know, I really don't. On current evidence though, it would appear no-one's going to come out of this smelling of roses. |

This is to save bandwidth for the more higher end o2 and Tesco brands clearly.

I wouldn't call Tesco or Tesco Mobile a high end brand...
As for Telefonica not owning Lyca Mobile - sure - but they do still own the network Lyca runs on and so have complete control over the wholesale pricing and rules that apply to them. Perhaps this is O2's way of dealing with any potential capacity issues before they arise, which was bound to happen given that they have, by far, the least 4G spectrum per customer than any other network. |

Waste of time. If you want 4G from O2, Lycamobile' £12 "unlimited plan" is the best option, otherwise go for Three.
Its what I have done, switched my backup from giffgaff to lycamobile, at least I can call my friend in Poland for free aswell. |

Tesco would though and are they now the fastest growing network? Im sure someone told me they have the same market share as 3? This of course could all be a load of rubbish.
I'm sure o2 wholesale will be happy in the short term to let anyone buy their data. After all if they want to slow usage down all they have to do is increase the wholesale price. |

I think giffgaff has passed it's shelf life now that the big players have caught up and are better positioned to serve customer needs. |

Fastest growing in what sense? It's easy to have high percentage growth from a small base... Adding one customer a year to an existing subscriber base of one gives you 100% growth whereas O2 have to add over 20,000 to even get 1%.
That said Tesco having the same market share as 3? Bollocks. Even the biggest MVNO in the UK, who've been going for over ten years, has a smaller market share than 3. |

So what are the market shares then for the operators?

When did giffgaff actually mention it was a trial? Sounds exactly like Three. |

Actually Giffgaff seemed to be completely clueless with their launch, there are threads hundreds of pages long without a single genuine update from staff.
If anything, giffgaff are making the Three roll out look extremely good. When they do post insightful stuff on their forums it usually comes as a result of said CRM staff bugging management for weeks/months. For a mobile network with 'run by you' as their motto, there is very little interaction between upper management and the end customer. |

What with the recent complaints about worsening data performance and now this, I've got a sneaking suspicion that Telefonica are in the process of running giffgaff down, and will eventually close the service and move subscribers onto o2 payg on preferential terms.
