The route starts off straightforward enough with a largely flat opening 30km which will suit the most powerful rouleurs in the field, but the final 17km includes the short climbs of Confederacion and Mirador, which could find out any riders that have dug too deep during the opening stages. Once they’ve crested the latter peak, a winding descent into Ponferrada will favour the brave, and those who are not afraid to push things to the very limit.

Sunday, September 28: Elite men’s road race, 254.8km (14 laps)
The race takes place on a hilly 18.2km circuit starting and finishing in Ponferrada. The loop carries a total ascent of 306m (4284m in total) and a maximum gradient of 11% means we're in for a real war of attrition, and it'll be a very tough race to predict.
The course features two main climbs - a long, steady ascent followed by a shorter, shaper ramp nearer the finish. The Alto de Montearenas (5.1km at 3.5%) is unlikely to shed too many of the in-form fast finishers, but the Alto de Compostilla (1.1km at 6.6%) is a far stiffer prospect and could allow the punchier riders to spring clear before a tricky descent to the finish line.
