I was wondering what is happening with regards to another series of Torchwood. The last I heard anyrhing was before Christmas, in October. John Barrowman said in an interview that there wasn't going to be another TW yet, but to watch this space.

Also, is John going to be in Doctor Who alongside Peter Capaldi? I think Jack would be brilliant in stories with the Twelfth Doctor.

Anyone know any more info?

The official word is that it's not been axed but it's not been renewed yet either; it's open to a return. To be honest I don't think it'll ever come back and after watching Miracle Day I'm personally not sure I'd ever want it to come back.

If you're waiting, 16 years is the established norm for an hiatus on this type of show...

Torchwood as a loose concept need never die. It can wait to be resurrected in some shape or form whenever someone fancies it whether that be RTD or someone else. But at present its fair to say Torchwood has finished it least Torchwood as we knew it. They just didn't have a satisfactory ending because it ended of a note of failure. That doesn't mean that RTd and Barrowman and Eve M can't start it again one day. I would be surprised if they didn't but for now its over I assumed.

I would always welcome Jack back. I love him especially in DW. But I actually don't care much about him returning with Capaldi. Jack and Matt never appearing together not to mention River is one of the great lost opportunities of Doctor Who ever. Its up there with the greatest. They would have been so brilliant together. Don't get me wrong. Jack is welcome anytime. But him with Twelve doesn't scream brilliant in the same way.

Having said that maybe it Capaldi is a more mature and serious and dark Doctor it would be nice to see him juxtaposed with Jack. And of course Jack himself has darkened considerably since his first appearances. Hell just get him back. Its box office. An open goal. To not do so seems almost wilfully obtuse on Moffats part.

I really hope it does not take that long!

Whilst not perfect 'Miracle Day' really went some way to crossing the bridge between the way UK TV makes drama, and the way the US makes big budget TV story arc series.

I think the problem for 'Miracle Day' was that it was too American for British taste, and too British for US consumers, But with a bit of tweaking they could get the mix right.

Torchwood is, as it has been for some time, dead in the water until further notice. Don't know why people keep wondering if this status has changed when nothing has been said to even suggest it might have.

Jack in who whoever is more likely, as he is a Moffat character, and Moffat had originally planned to include him in a good man goes to war, which proves he's willing to have a post Tennant appearance for jack. Surely he can't be oblivious to all of people who think it would be a dream to see river and jack in an episode, so I think it all depends on whether he can come up with a good enough story for Jack, river, and the doctor to all be able to bounce of each other in an entertaining way.

I'd love to see River Song and Jack Harkness together in DW, or in a spin-off! It would be great!

I think they made a mistake killing off 3 of the 5 original team...and then killing off the one of the replacements as well. Series 4 was okay, but nothing brilliant.

I do think the Whoniverse seems much smaller nowadays. We used to have the main show that was 13 episodes (starting regularly each Spring) plus a Christmas special each year, and two wonderful spin-off shows with SJA and Torchwood. Now we have no spin-off shows at all and a main show that's all over the place.

I hope when Moffat leaves they have a new exec producer/lead writer who is as committed to Doctor Who as RTD was. It would be lovely to have Torchwood back but, failing that, a new spin-off show would be good.

The lack of spin offs is nothing to do with Moffats commitment to the show. Budgets have changed. TV has changed. Sneaky of you to slip that in there as if its fact when its actually based on nothing but your own preference for RTD. All the evidence suggests Moffat is just as committed if not more so. Do you really think the BBC are on their knees begging him to make for Doctor Who product and hes saying no because he cant be bothered? Where do people get this stuff from?

Or heres a crazy idea...one that doesn't seem to occur to alot of fans who seem to value quantity over content...maybe Moffat doesn't feel there is the need or reason for a spin off. You know. A creative decision made by a creative person who understands Television production as opposed to fans who behave like greedy kids in a sweet shop. WANT MORE NOW!!! No thanks. SJA was utter drivel. Only one season of Torchwood was truly classic and alot of the other stuff was just the kind of hyped up filler cheap crap that gets thrown at any 'new' show ie Confidential and that DW CBBC magazine show.

Less is sometimes more. And Moffat clearly values quality above all else. If the BBC offered him millions to make a Paternoster spin off that could live up to its promise he would probably do it. But he wont turn out a cheap watered down version for little money that sits alongside Wizards and Aliens and Young Dracula. Good.

With RTD at the helm we had both quality and quantity. The Eccleston and Tennant era's were mostly brilliant. I thought series 1-3 of Torchwood were all great, as blatantly did a lot of others judging by the fact of not only that it kept getting recommissioned but also by the fact that it jumped in status based on it's quality by moving from bbc three, to bbc two, to bbc one over the course of those first three series. Two great shows and yet somehow, he even found time to make a kids show on the side as well in the form of SJA. That is commitment, which is why I completely understand where Mullet is coming from.

No - one's saying Moffat should be forced at gun point to write a spin off series, it's just easy to be nostalgic for that time, only a few short years ago, when the doctor who universe got so much more exposure, and equally easy to wonder whether the difference lies in the change of person at the head of it all, which I understand of course it may not be but also could be at least in part.

Well im sure Moffat is quite content with the other show he is currently running. I hear it does quite well.

It didn't. Worldwide its now bigger than ever without the need for spin offs. Torchwood was a minor show until COE. It then bombed in the states with Miracle Day. Hardly anyone watched SJA.

Re a new series of Torchwood, why would Moffat have to be involved at all ? He's the executive producer of Dr Who, not Torchwood, why could'nt another producer bring back Torchwood ?. Fair enough Moffat would have to OK a Captain Jack appearence in Dr Who but Torchwood is outside his remit. Do people honestly think that if the BBC decided to make another Torchwood, Moffat would be able to stop it ? Bring it back, set it back in Cardiff and forget that American connection all together and oh yes, lets have Jack meet the new Doctor.

So because you didnt personally rate Torchwood series 1-2 or SJA then that makes them 'minor' or hardly watched?. Hmm bbc must have kept recommissioning them just for the fun of it then.

As said with torchwood, some shows which start on bbc three only air there for their duration, with most only ever reaching bbc two if succesful, but C of E was aired on BBC one as a result of the success of the previous two series. Then C of E capitalised on that, making it more successful than ever. It was only miracle day which ruined it all. As for SJA I suspect it would have gone on even longer than it did were it not for the untimely passing of liz sladen

I don't really care either way if their now better than ever at flogging the rights to other countries. All I know is that at one time there was one main series, with two enjoyable spin off's and now there's a lot less.

To be honest, a spin off would be nice, but I wouldn't even mind never seeing a spin off again if the actual main show could be consistent and with regular amounts once again. Time was, you knew, 13 episodes starting every spring like clockwork, but in recent years you never know what your going to get. What did we get last year in terms of episodes in it's grand 50th year? one special and half a series left over from the year before.

Barrowman has a reasonably succesful US career (roles in "Zero Dark Thirty"
and "Arrow"), so he may not be able to return to any new TW series.

Rumour was he got arrow bosses to agree in principle to let him have time off if he was asked to appear in the 50th and he was very vocal in interviews beforehand about wanting to be in it. I believe at one point he even said it would be a 'travesty' if Jack didn't get to be in it, so as far as I can see it seems as though Jack is still his favourite role and if they asked him to reprise it tomorrow, in either doctor who or torchwood, I think he would try and do everything in his power to make it work.

Knowing that he still is so passionate about it, is what makes me want to see him back even more. Although arranging an appearance or two in Doctor who itself seems the easiest and most likely to be arranged. Imagine him flirting with Clara, only for the doctor to tell him to stop, then him turning to danny pink, and the doctor saying 'don't even think about it'

In a TV interview John Barrowman seemed more keen to get the Hollow Earth novels that he has been writing with his sister turned into a TV series.

Sorry, Salad. I've been keeping my negative opinion of Moffat under control for months now. It was bound to slip out sooner or later!

Seriously, though, I would disagree with you about Moffat being as committed to Who as RTD. In fact, I would suggest the complete opposite to you - that all the evidence suggests he's not. The biggest disgrace of NuWho is that in its 50th anniversary year, all we got was a single episode of Doctor Who in place of an entire season. That would never have happened under RTD. He would have delivered a stonking 50th anniversary season - not just a 50th anniversary episode.

The lack of any spin-off shows under Moffat (and his concentration on Sherlock) is further evidence of this.

And I don't think the BBC is begging him to stay either, more like creating an environment where he can finally bow out with his head held high (bringing back Brian Minchin was a very smart move). The show has not gone from strength to strength under Moffat. He's held on to most of the success he inherited, but certainly not all of it.

I would also disagree that Who is now bigger internationally than ever - it is (hopefully) as big as it was under RTD, with viewing figures being pretty static (although funny how Tennant remains the most popular Doctor in other countries, like the USA) but it remains less popular worldwide than it was during the 80s when it was watched by 100m people worldwide.

But your opinion and my opinion . . . its all just conjecture at the end of the day

RTD has moved on, and now involved with other shows such as Wizards v Aliens...

In general, sci-fi drama seems to be a bit out of favour. I even worry that dr who itself may be facing the potential chop in a few years time - nothing lasts forever. However, the new crop of Star Wars films may re-invigorate the genre.

But its all just guess work. We don't know the internal production machinations and tribulations that have gone on recently. We have hints but not the full story. Therefore we cannot say RTD could have kept everything on a steadier course. I actually suspect that Sherlock has caused Moffat to take his eye off the ball a bit with DW...and I'm supposedly a Moffat fanboy!...and I think he's made some very odd decisions. That said I think alot of stuff is outside of his control including the spin off stuff. Fact is during RTD DW was new and a phenomenon and as such the BBC threw money at it relentlessly. Its since settled down and become something of the old familiar. And with the budget cuts going on left right and centre its just not feasible that the BBC would fund a big,budget spin off like TW. Its only a few years but times have changed massively. BBC3 is going. CBBC is relegated to free view. Its a different world Moffat is working in and as such I think its unfair to place the blame at his door. Maybe partly. But not for the most part. He loves Doctor Who!

I have no doubt at all he loves Doctor Who, and I also agree that it is much more difficult to keep a successful show going, especially when you've just reached its ninth anniversary (9 YEARS!!). Most of the successful US fantasy/sci-fi shows stop at seven.
