Fine weather and a bank holiday, people have better things to do. Wonder if the bingos were open as well.

An Israeli informant has told me that a new show has launched over there recently which is being hailed as the Next Big Thing. It is a gameshow called 'Boom!'.

In Boom!, a squad of four players are given the challenge of defusing eight (replica) bombs by answering trivia questions correctly within a strict time limit. A nominated player must defuse one bomb per question by cutting through colored wires which represent multiple choice answers. If the player answers correctly, the prize money remains intact and the squad moves to the next bomb. If they cut the wrong wire, or run out of time, the bomb will explode strewing material across the studio and visibly shaking the set. The team loses one player per exploded bomb, and 25% of the potential prize money. Keshet International CEO Alon Shtruzman, who has assured me the bombs are not dangerous, calls the show “a game changer for the genre.”

The first episode got a massive 41% share of the audience, the highest ever for a game show launch in Israel's history. Episode 2 which just aired increased its audience to 42%, including rises in all key demographics. The show has already been sold to major broadcasters around the world including FOX [US] and TF1 [France]. Who in the UK will get hold of this much anticipated format?

I reckon the share would have been double that if it wasn't replica bombs. That's the problem with game shows, always let themselves down one one part of the format

And when did the BBC last hire in a major ITV personality ? Unlike ITV they tend to develop their own, and successfully too. Years ago Martyn Lewis, Nik Gowing and Nicholas Owen moved from ITN, Simon McCoy came from Sky. Bill Turnbull is a long-time BBC person who was Washington correspondent for years, Sian Williams came up through BBC radio and News 24 (as was).

Your obsession with Samuel is troubling, if you don't like him put him on ignore. Samuel is a total wind up merchant, you trolling him is exactly what he wants.

I seriously worry for anyone who considers BBC Breakfast hard news! Seriously you'll have a heart attack if you watch C4 news or Newsnight.

I meant 2 hours of continual news. I don't particularly need you to worry about me, but thank you for your concern. It's noted.

Do people watch the show? Because unless people aren't watching a show, there is an audience for that show.

So do we expect ratings down across the board tonight or much the same as last week?

I can't see Britain's Got Talent holding up considering a much smaller lead in and worse time slot and Pointless might be hurt because of the stronger opposition. The rest of the night might be interesting - The Guess List will have easier opposition and Amazing Greys a more beneficial slot but neither of the first episodes seemingly went down well so they could go either way.

Itv would have been down quite a bit anyway without the Easter weekend so it might not be too pretty for them week on week. That might support some parts of the BBC schedule this week, particularly from 8pm. But I can't imagine they'll be posting any impressive numbers.

The whole explosion thing is a bit... weird, particularly given its birth in Israel. But that aside it's a neat enough idea. Gameshows here have become a very daytime proposition. I guess Channel 4 need a new primetime gameshow if Million Pound Drop has been cancelled (it has at least been scaled down in terms of episodes). Itv might also be in the running given ITV Studios is making Rising Star and this show is from the same company (Keshet).

PS: For those of us without Israeli sources, Deadline (and a multitude of other trade sites) have the info. I would also point out that it's basic courtesy for users to cite their sources.

Terrific rating for Gogglebox there. Alan Carr did OK afterwards but he should perhaps have done a little more with the lead-in.

Does anyone know what Harry Potter got yesterday afternoon?

In sure we get the same posts about the soaps dominating this thread after every episode now, which basically means 5 days a week. EastEnders in crisis, Corrie in crisis, Emmerdale in crisis, EastEnders plots discussed in the finest of detail with them being described as the best ever, the same people making the same posts every 2 days. It's not that interesting.”

Maybe the bigger theme is soaps as a genre are in crisis or at least losing their allure and hold on the public imagination?

I'd agree. Had DS been around 15 years ago the discussion would have been about how popular they were and how Emmerdale had doubled its audience in five years. Now it seems they're in a slow decline and are behind BGT, SCD, IAC, MBB and TXF in the ratings. The endless misery and hopeless acting are turning people away.

The thing is though that we dont actually know what is the truth about the current soap ratings and so the discussion is likely to go one until we do.

That's the case for every show though. The soaps aren't individual in this regard; the system is the same to measure Coronation Street, EastEnders etc. as it is Strictly Come Dancing, Britain's Got Talent etc.
