Excellent ratings for both Eurovision AND BGT despite what some WUM says!

That is a loads of people who don't know what a off or a change channel button is, I don't see the appeal of Eurovision. Rather watch Generation War on BBC Two.

I dont know what thats got to do with anything I said, I didnt mention the shares. Excluding +1, BGT's share was lower than Eurovision's anyway - which is the fairest comparison you can make.

I think people also bought into the big story of the night with Austria - the peak came for the result, not just the UK's performance. And we did give them 12 points as well.

That's something of a contradiction. It's airing in the summer at 7pm. Of course they don't have big hopes for it. And I don't think it's an ITVS show either.

It sounded so bizarre I thought it was worth posting. Apparently Atkinson won great acclaim for his acting when he appeared in the West End last year in Quartermaine's Terms.The Gambon Maigret was described by one critic as ''a disaster.''

Eurovision doesnt have high quality singing or entertainment that BBC viewers are used to - the Appreciation Index scores for it every year must be quite low. In addition to that, every year when the UK does badly, the BBC gets some of the blame for "sending poor songs to the contest" or "the BBC have sent an unknown artists" or "the BBC just dont know what a good song is etc". The bbc does get criticised quite a bit from the back of Eurovision. However due to how well it rates, the BBC can sort of accept that baggage that comes with airing a contest like this with its huge bias and strange voting trends and just keep airing it due to the huge ratings.

Sending an average song and gaining huge ratings for £300,000 for 3 hours of prime time, against sending a fantastic song choice and being faced with a £30 million bill for staging 3 hours of prime time the following year - it is easy to see which option the BBC would prefer.

And presumably, that criticism is widespread is it, or is it only generally seen on online forums and social media (where there are many positive comments as well, enhancing their reputation)?

Or maybe any effect one way or the other is so minimal it can be ignored? Especially as those who want a reason to criticise the BBC will find one anyway, and those who want to jump onto a passing bandwagon will do so with glee.

BGMT stayed strong, rising from 1.57m to 1.60m despite Eurovision competition. And the late night BGT repeat at 11.35pm had 471,000 up from 292,000 last week, likely corresponding to lower SD timeshift during the Eurovision slot.

But don't they watch The Voice?

(Funnily enough, the Austrian entry would have been a home run of a contestant for The Voice).

I wonder how Generation War did last night on time-shift seeing that people would record the last part of that show to watch Eurovision Song Contest?

BBC One's all-day share was up over +3 points on Eurovision night 2013; ITV was down more than -3 points.

The post-contest news last year had 4.0m/32.5% at 23:30; it might have been higher last night given the much higher peak (9.28m/48.4% at 22:55 last year; 10.60m/55.8% at 23:00 last night). Long period between the peak and the start of the news though.

I liked it. The Danes were good hosts, but Pilou's Chinese jokes were awful.

3.7% share for ITV2 all day. (5.35% of 16-34s.) Canny scheduling by ITV2 to factor in a Eurovision over-run and start the repeat at 23:35.

2.8% for ITV3, 1.3% for ITV4 (all individuals, all inc +1).

I'm happy with that, But I think Eurovision finished late.

I know it was far from a usual Saturday, but those numbers still strike me as remarkable. Let us not forget, ITV are currently airing perhaps their single biggest show - yet the daily share only just scraped into double figures. The ratings for the biggest shows have held up OK over the past few years, but everything underneath them seems to drop like a stone. Continued launches of new digital channels will help prop up the overall family share, I guess, but the days when ITV were genuinely competitive with BBC One over a full day seem a rather long way gone.

Job done for the BBC. And regardless of your opinion of it, what other show could hope to get those sort of figures that late at night?


Not a chance. While Guy Freeman is back in charge (the guy who oversaw the Gina G / Katrina years) we'll be taking it seriously. Maybe not with acts we've heard of but certainly with credible songs.

But I have been continually told over the last week on here that it was a very good song with a chance of winning.
